We recently connected with Eugene Bennett and have shared our conversation below.
Eugene, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
It took building confidence and trust in my abilities, and knowing that I’m in that room for a reason. Imposter syndrome is real, and I also deal with it, but sometimes you have to take a step back and look at what you’ve done, and the people you’ve helped.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a self taught Director of Photography and colorist. My path to the camera started with photography in 2013 with vacation photography. That eventually led to me taking it seriously, and learning the craft of portrait photography. I later started taking bookings and created a nice side hustle out of it. As I became more experienced, I looked for a bigger challenge, and video was it. Starting with videography, I learned how to operate cameras through numerous masterclasses during the covid lockdown. During that time I wrote the script for my first short film.
Ever since, I’ve been continuously learning, and experiencing more in the realm of film. Each opportunity has provided its own learning experience. The best part about being a DP, is creating the directors vision. Everyone has a different interpretation of what that may be, but yours is unique. I also feel that my execution is also exceptional due to the level of preparation I apply beforehand.
Even though I mainly DP, and crew with other directors to help tell their stories, I still take the time to create my own passion projects. My proof of concept pilot “Blue Pill” will be screening on July 26, 2025 at an event that I’d like to call the early stages of my own film festival.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Always be willing to learn, always be willing to try something new, and always communicate well. Communication is so important while on set for so many reasons. Being clear in what you need from your gaffer, or describing a shot in a way to your director that isn’t too technical. Communication is a skill in itself. For me, it was always about being respectful to people in a given moment, and it’s never really about pulling rank. You also have to learn to not take anything personal.
One thing I’m huge on, is building a YouTube queue of videos that will help me build a new skill that will make me more effective at what I do. Most of the knowledge you’re seeking is likely available for free. And you have to take advantage of networking opportunities.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
“The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck”.
This may sound like a crazy choice, but this book brought so much perspective to my life. It taught me how to prioritize, and therefore have a clear vision of what actually deserves my energy. It also taught me how to detach from things that no longer needed my attention.
