Meet Eugenia Peralta

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Eugenia Peralta. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Eugenia below.

Eugenia, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Art has always been my passion. I grew up in a family of artists and was surrounded by art all the time. Before my father passed, he gave me a beautiful and powerful painting of an ocean. I remember the impact, feeling drawn into it and in that moment, I realized the power art has on people. I studied Communication Studies at the Iberoamericana University in Mexico City, worked as a production assistant in a production company and then I started a boutique public relations agency focused on luxury brands. I organized art events and that’s when it clicked… art was my true calling. In 2008 I moved to New York to pursue my MA in Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute. I was full of doubt, it was a huge change. People thought I was crazy to leave behind my PR business, but I focused on my passion, on the feelings that art evokes in me and in others, and little by little I overcame that fear. More so, I work at New Art Dealers Alliance, NADA, at a gallery in SoHo and in a non for profit, organizing an art auction. But it was when I moved to Miami in 2015 when the imposter syndrome kicked in again… I wanted to start my own art advisory business, and I did not know where to start, how to find clients, how I wanted to get the business afloat. So, one thing that helped me was, besides writing a business plan, was to compartmentalize different aspects and tackle one at the time. When in doubt, always ask for help. I looked for a professional coach who helped me with my purpose and I contacted my mentor from my masters. Surround yourself with people who can clarify and shape your objectives and get them in motion. Since then, I was able to understand my brand, my purpose, and make it a way it works organically. Now I run my business in Mexico City and Miami, traveling, meeting new artists, friends, clients and having success in my area. When in doubt, remember your purpose, write it down, believe in yourself and see how far you have made it and that al the dots connect. Not because you have changed career paths does not mean you cannot make it. On the contrary, skills that you have learned are always going to be there. Being yourself is your super power, you have something special to bring to the table.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

As I mentioned before, I am an Art Consultant. Since I moved to Miami in 2015, I was immediately immersed in the city’s unique and vibrant cultural environment. I’ve always been interested in learning about new cultural scenes and in connecting both emerging and established artists Miami, South America and Beyond.
I started “Eugenia Peralta Art Consultant” in 2020 with the purpose of becoming a bridge between artists and collectors and humanizing the process of collecting art beyond an economic transaction to one that’s more deep, knowledgeable and intimate.
I now work from Mexico City and travel to Miami to keep meeting new artists and clients. Moving to Mexico represented a challenge itself, but the immense cultural scene is fantastic.
I make special emphasis on helping my clients make informed investments in art. In order to do so, I dedicate my time to getting to know my clients to learn what motivates and inspires them. It is a complete process that includes a discovery session, procuring, selecting and curating the artworks, including acquisition and installation.
Once it’s all done, I love the way the clients live with that artwork and make it theirs. I bring together my passion for the arts, my experience in the field to create a personalized and curated process for my clients, and my experience in public relations and marketing to have a unique and curated experience.

I also work with corporate clients and businesses to help them better understand their aesthetic interests, establish budgets, and provide guidance during the selection and acquisition process. I am always eager to learn from different artists and mediums to better advise my clients. I’ve also worked in tandem with interior designers, which is also a great alliance.

I’ve also worked with luxury brands creating collaborations with different artists, from luxury beachwear Lume to wine hand painted handbags with Ximena Kavalekas. Additionally, I love being involved in different art projects. I have been invited to serve as a board member for the annual Art Auction for Mexico Vivo, a non-profit dedicated to promote sexual health and education, which creates a high impact in society. I am a collaborator in MM Mexico Moda Magazine, where I write interviews about different artists and their styles. Those activities keep me connected to different areas of the art scene, which is always evolving.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I would say knowledge, resilience and exploration.
Knowledge is the base for everything else. First and foremost, knowing what you want to do and why. When you have your answer, then seek professional /academic knowledge. Does not matter your area, you have to dig deep and go for it.
Resilience, because no matter what you do, you will always find struggles and if you have your “why,” you can keep moving and working towards your goal.
Exploration, because you have to explore within yourself what makes you unique in your field, as a person, as a brand, and communicate it in a way you attract the clients you want and need. And also, exploration of the world around you. Which areas could compliment my journey or my field? What relevant event is going on that is worth attending? More so, exploration of people who could help you. Don’t be afraid to knock on doors, that might open new possibilities.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

When I moved to Miami in 2015, I was focused on my family. Going back to the workforce was overwhelming and I didn’t even know where to start, what to do, where to look. I found amazing people along the way who helped me a great deal. One, was my professional coach. She helped me find my WHY, and helped me develop the tools I needed to shape my brand and all the different aspects that it entails. Once you have that clear, it’s the core of everything else you start building on top.
Another person was one of my Masters professors. He helped me understand the art world through his successful business and gave me valuable advice on how to manage some administrative tasks.
