Meet Evan Davis

We were lucky to catch up with Evan Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Evan, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
When I kicked off my freelancing gig as a videographer, diving into networking events and hitting up local companies made me feel like I was bothering everyone. New videographers often hit me up, asking how I got over that awkward hurdle of talking to people and selling myself without the whole used-car-salesman vibe.

I wish I could give you a magic three-step fix, but for me, it was all about trial and error. I went to so many networking events, doing the awkward walk-up to random folks, attempting to start a chat. Fast forward three years of rubbing elbows with strangers, and I’ve managed to build up a confidence that lets me walk into a room with other professionals and not feel like the odd man out.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hey, I’m Evan Davis, and I run Evan Davis Media, a video production company nestled in Westminster, Maryland. What gets me out of bed every morning is the thrill of weaving together the narratives of businesses and highlighting the incredible stuff they’re up to in their local communities.

When I started as a freelance videographer, I would take any gig that came my way. Fast forward to now, I’ve discovered my sweet spot – collaborating with passionate business owners to capture the essence of their companies and lives on camera. It’s all about showcasing what makes them absolutely stellar to the world!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When diving into the dynamic world of video production, there are three key principles I swear by:

Punctuality is Key: In the client-centric realm of video production, timeliness is non-negotiable. I make it a point to be ahead of the game at every stage—delivering quotes and contracts well in advance, arriving on set early to set up efficiently, and ensuring a swift turnaround for the final edit. Demonstrating dedication through prompt delivery not only showcases reliability but also establishes a solid foundation for long-term success.

Quality Trumps Quantity: While it might be tempting to churn out a multitude of quick, simple videos, as a videographer, I’ve learned that the enduring impact lies in quality. Clients often envision their videos as lasting representations of their companies for years to come. Prioritizing the creation of enduring, high-quality content over rushed, lower-quality alternatives ensures client satisfaction and strengthens professional credibility.

Embrace a Strong Work Ethic: It’s a no-brainer—maintaining a robust work ethic is paramount. Imagine showing up late, sluggishly setting up equipment, and providing minimal guidance to talent during filming. By exuding confidence and diligence, not only does it make clients more comfortable working with you, but it also lays the groundwork for a collaborative environment, resulting in superior video production outcomes.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
I owe my entire journey to my parents. When high school graduation rolled around, the typical four-year college path didn’t align with my passion for video production. Instead, I discovered a local video trade school offering real-world experience and the essential tools to kickstart a career as a professional videographer. Opting for this unconventional educational route was fully supported by my parents.

When I completed the program, I was all in on building my business. Fortunately, my parents provided a safety net, allowing me to stay with them until I felt secure enough in both myself and my venture to venture out on my own. Without their unwavering support, I doubt I would have felt the confidence to take a leap of faith in myself and my business.
