Meet Evan Greif

We were lucky to catch up with Evan Greif recently and have shared our conversation below.

Evan, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I grew up in a low income household and lost my family home to foreclosure, like many other millennials of my generation due to the 2008 mortgage crisis. My siblings and I saw our parents struggle with money, and I made it my mission to never be in a financially vulnerable position at their age. I learned everything I could about managing my money and optimizing my personal finances, scouring books, blogs, podcasts, articles and any resource I could find to understand how to increase my income, reduce expenses, and invest my savings responsibly so my money could work for me. I felt the shame, low self-esteem, and stigma that comes with growing up in poverty, and have made it my mission to help others escape the cycle of generational poverty, build wealth and take control of their financial future.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I teach everyday people how to earn more money, cut back on unnecessary expenses, invest in assets to build their wealth, and spend on the things that matter to them. To me, the object of money is not about the money itself, but the freedom it grants you. I get excited teaching people about tips and tricks that aren’t well known simply because it is not taught about in our education systems today. Taking control of your finances and building your wealth brings huge dividends – literally and figuratively – in life where you can feel in control of your destiny and maintain your mental health. I want people to learn about personal finance so they can spend on the things that matter to them, whether that’s housing, traveling the world, helping their family through higher education, or the freedom to work on things that matter to them instead of feeling tied to a particular job.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three most impactful things were to have patience with yourself, developing a personal framework on how to deal with uncertainty in life, and the habit of reading.

My advice would be to recognize that your are human, and as a matter of course you will make mistakes. But you should only judge yourself (and others) on your reaction in the face of those mistakes.

Adopt the mindset of ABL “Always Be Learning”, because in life, the more that you learn, the more you learn how much you don’t know. Having principles (an established personal framework or “value system”) about how to deal with the unknown will help you avoid analysis paralysis, take action and continue learning about reality and refining yourself in the process. Don’t compete with others, but with who you were the day before. Even small progress is progress.

The habit of reading is a superpower. Paying less than $20 to peek into the minds of and gain an understanding of humanity’s greatest scholars, scientists, artists, economists, business owners, and leaders, etc. is a huge privilege that all of us have today. The only requirement is to invest the time into the habit. This allows you to bypass learning through your own life’s mistakes (which take time and are costly) but instead learn from the mistakes of others, and glean wisdom from their experiences.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am looking to collaborate with (and potentially partner with) folks who are interested in learning about and discussing personal finance topics and tips on a podcast together.

Anyone interested can connect with me via email at [email protected]
