Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Evan Towell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Evan with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I attribute my strong work ethic to my upbringing, shaped by my parents and the great teachers I had growing up. In my acting career, my dedication stems from the invaluable guidance of my coaches and mentors. Anthony Paderewski instilled in me the importance of continuous training, treating it like a workout routine to keep my skills sharp. William Mark McCullough taught me the business side of acting, how to stay on top of marketing, build my brand, and take control of my career. Their lessons have been instrumental in shaping my discipline and approach to the industry.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and now live in Charleston, South Carolina. My acting journey began 10 years ago when I started working as an extra on the HBO series “Vice Principals”, and since then, I’ve been steadily building my career.
I’m thrilled about my upcoming role in the Shining Light Pictures horror-comedy “The Fetus”, directed by Joe Lam, where I portray the younger version of the main character played by legendary horror icon Bill Moseley, also starring Lauren LaVera and Julian Curtis. Additionally, I have a key role as Forrest, the protagonist in the upcoming series “On the Run”, directed by Isaac Stovall and a starring role as Bruce in the horror film “Someone Sinister”, directed by Jonathan Baty. I’m also stepping into a completely different genre with “Unmasking the Truth”, a political drama produced by Sharon Davis, where I play the Chief of Staff of the White House.
Beyond acting, I’m expanding my creative pursuits—I plan to start writing and performing stand-up comedy this year, as well as producing, directing, and starring in my own short films.
When I’m not on set, I manage Oysters XO, an event company in Charleston specializing in professional oyster shucking for major events. This role allows me to bring energy, precision, and a dynamic presence—skills that also enhance my work as a performer.
With exciting projects on the horizon, I’m eager to continue growing and pushing boundaries in the entertainment industry.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’ve learned that social media is a powerful tool for marketing yourself as an actor—you are the CEO of your own brand. Many of my opportunities have come from networking with like-minded people online, proving just how valuable these connections can be.
Success in this industry requires tenacity and a constant drive to improve. You have to keep learning, evolving, and refining your craft. Kevin Bacon once told me you might as well fall in love with rejection because it’s one of the biggest parts of the business, and I couldn’t agree more.
To truly excel, I believe it’s essential to study every aspect of filmmaking—from camera lenses and angles to lighting and how a film or TV show comes together. Understanding the full process not only strengthens your skills as an actor but also deepens your appreciation for the craft.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
“New Thoughts for Actors” by Jack Plotnick is a book I highly recommend for anyone in the industry or anyone seeking a positive outlook on life. It offers valuable insights on maintaining a healthy perspective toward the business, focusing on your wants and needs as an actor, and embracing the journey with confidence.
One of the book’s key takeaways is the importance of thinking the thought, feeling the feelings, and throwing away the words—a technique that helps bring authenticity to performances. It also provides practical audition strategies and reinforces the power of a positive mindset, especially when dealing with rejection.
No matter where you are in your career, this book is an invaluable resource that can help you navigate the ups and downs of the industry with resilience and clarity.
