Meet Evyn Dean

We recently connected with Evyn Dean and have shared our conversation below.

Evyn, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

Optimism is tricky. Quite frankly, it can be hard to find when things seem to just not be going your way. I have learned very quickly that starting a business is not going to be sunshine and rainbows. Some weeks come with a lot of business, while the next week may come with slim to none. Starting anything new can be challenging. When I begin to feel unmotivated, I look into the reasons why I started my photography business in the first place. Those reasons are my passion for photography, and my path written by Jesus Christ. I felt pulled into photography and often find myself smiling bigger than ever when a client expresses their love of their gallery. That and the fact that Jesus knew his plan for me all along keeps me going.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I grew up with an artistic background. Painting, drawing, sculpting, you name it. I also have grown up to witness technology advancing to an extreme form. Social media has grown to be such an outlet to share photos of our day-to-day lives, or monumental moments we want to remember forever. A camera holds so much power, especially today. I feel so excited to capture moments that people want to share with the world. That being so, I am a freelance sports photographer as well as the owner of Evyn Dean Photography which captures Weddings, Families, Seniors, etc.!

I played soccer almost my entire life. I was always told I was a “multi-purpose player.” Everyone else had a position on the field and I felt like an oddball. I was put on the field as an outside back, center back, defensive mid, attacking mid, forward. You name it. It just depended on the game and the opponent. Wherever I was needed I would go. Much like my life is today. For the longest time, I wanted to stick to one area of photography. It would simplify things. Until I realized that’s not me. I am a “multi-purpose player.” Put me in any area of photo and I will adapt. Primarily that is what I built Evyn Dean Photography off of. Adapting and learning a new style of photography. Something I can be proud of, outside of only sports photography. I have had a blast venturing into this completely different world of photo (weddings, families, Seniors), and I am so excited to see where all it takes me.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three areas of knowledge that have been most impactful in my journey so far.

1. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Be spontaneous and love what you do. Photography is an art. There are no rules.

2. Find your style. Every artist has their own style. Don’t compare your work to someone else’s, create how you want to create!

3. Lift each other up. As much as I hate to say it, it’s hard not to compare your work to others when there are so many talented creatives! Support other creatives and they will support you! I have found the community of photographers both sports and weddings, are some of the most uplifting people. It’s a niche area of work and they know what it takes to get there. make connections and support one another, even if it’s just over social media.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

I often find myself feeling overwhelmed when I have a ton of photos to edit. Looking at all 2,500 photos or however many, can look like a beast. I often hop on social media, scroll through Instagram and look at other photographers posts to feel inspired. To me, it’s like listening to warm-up music before a big game. I have to warm up before diving into such a large gallery lol.
