Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Fabian Alomar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Fabian , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose through a transformative journey that overcame significant personal challenges. Growing up in a tough neighborhood in Echo Park, my family was involved in gang life and drugs. I was born into it. Skateboarding was my way out at first, but I got caught up with everything my family was doing, and soon, I faced multiple incarcerations. However, during his time in prison, I experienced a profound change in perspective.
After my release, I began to channel my energy into creative outlets, particularly acting and filmmaking. I realized that my past experiences could be a powerful tool to inspire and educate others, especially those at risk of falling into similar life paths. My involvement in the arts gave me a new sense of direction and purpose, allowing me to advocate for anti-recidivism and support formerly incarcerated individuals in rebuilding their lives with the help of (ARC ). The Anti-Recidivism Coalition
My work, both in front of and behind the camera, reflects my commitment to telling authentic stories and positively impacting my community. Through my journey, I found that my true purpose lies in using my platform to raise awareness about the challenges faced by those re-entering society and to inspire change through storytelling.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Fabian Alomar, an actor and filmmaker who advocates for social change, particularly in anti-recidivism and supporting formerly incarcerated individuals. My work is rooted in my own life experiences, and I use storytelling as a powerful tool to connect with people and drive change.
What excites me the most about what I do is the ability to bring raw, authentic stories to the forefront—stories that aren’t always told but are crucial for understanding the complexities of life, especially for those who’ve faced similar struggles to mine. I believe in the power of representation and showing that no matter where you come from, it’s possible to transform your life and make a positive impact.
Right now, I’m involved in projects that aim to uplift voices by helping my communities. Working with youth programs at El Centro del Pueblo, we are working with many youths who need programs. New projects also bring awareness to the challenges formerly incarcerated individuals face as they reintegrate into society. I’m also exploring new collaborations that align with these values, and I am looking to expand my work in the film industry and advocacy.
Some exciting projects I’m proud of. I had the opportunity to work on **Season 2 of *Poker Face***, which was a great experience, diving into a character that brought a lot of depth to the storyline. I also starred in the short film **”Fireline,”** which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. This significant project allowed me to explore new creative avenues and showcase a powerful story.
I was also fortunate to be part of the series ” Mayans M.C. “** for a few seasons, where I immersed myself in a world that resonated with many fans. It was a challenging and rewarding experience that increased my acting growth.
In addition, I was part of the cast for Flamin’ Hot, a movie that has been generating a lot of buzz. It was an honor to be involved in a project that celebrates a unique and inspiring story.
On the production side, I’ve been working as a producing partner with Alexander Garcia on **The Evilry.”** This collaboration has been an exciting step into the world of producing, allowing me to shape stories from the ground up. It’s been a rewarding experience.
These projects represent diverse experiences and have allowed me to continue growing as an actor and producer.
Anyone who’s followed my journey should know that my story is one of resilience and redemption. I’m committed to using my platform to inspire others to find their paths to purpose.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
**1. Resilience:** Growing up in a harsh environment and facing challenges like incarceration, I had to develop a strong sense of resilience. Skateboarding taught me this early on—the importance of getting back up after every fall, no matter how hard. This mindset carried over into my acting career, where rejection and setbacks are part of the process. I advise anyone starting their journey to embrace failure as a learning experience and keep pushing forward, no matter how tough it gets.
**2. Adaptability:** Adaptability has been crucial to navigating the streets, learning the ropes in the acting world, or transitioning into film production. Skateboarding taught me how to read the terrain and adjust quickly, an invaluable skill in every aspect of my life. For those early in their journey, I’d say stay open to change, be willing to learn new skills and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Adaptability will open up new opportunities and keep you moving forward.
**3. Empathy:** Mentoring and giving back to the community, especially those who’ve been through the system, has shown me the power of empathy. Understanding and connecting with others on a deeper level helps them and enriches your own life. Empathy allows you to tell authentic stories that resonate with people in acting and filmmaking. For those just starting, I recommend cultivating empathy by listening to others, sharing your experiences, and using your platform to uplift those who need it most.
These qualities have shaped my journey and continue to guide me as I take on new challenges. For anyone beginning their path, focus on building resilience, staying adaptable, and practicing empathy. These skills will not only help you succeed but also enable you to make a meaningful impact along the way.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The current challenge I face is the slowdown in acting opportunities and the shift of many production companies leaving Los Angeles. This has made it harder to find consistent work in the industry, and it’s a tough time for many of us who rely on these opportunities.
To overcome this challenge, I’m focusing on creating projects and producing films that align with my vision. By taking control of the creative process, I’m keeping myself engaged and providing opportunities for others in the industry who might be facing similar challenges. Additionally, I’m exploring collaborations outside of Los Angeles, looking at how I can expand my network and work on projects in different locations.
In times of adversity, it’s important to stay proactive and innovative. Rather than waiting for opportunities to come, I’m working on building them myself, staying true to my passion for storytelling and my commitment to making a positive impact through my work.
