We were lucky to catch up with Faith Dodson-Bey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Faith , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from taking inventory of everything God has already blessed me with. A friend once told me, ‘If God wanted things to be any different, they would be,’ and I carry that with me. It reminds me that the place I’m in right now is just one chapter of a much bigger story. Deep down I know God has something huge for me, even if I can’t see it yet. Faith and certainty that He’s not done with me is what keeps me going and allows me to be resilient.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m the founder of Stylez by Slim, where I specialize in creating hair experiences that allow people to feel confident, bold, and unstoppable. Hair has always been more than a hobby for me, it’s been my first love and my creative outlet since I was about 12 years old.
What brings me the most joy is seeing my clients face light up when they look in the mirror at their finished result; In that moment, a surge of confidence is revealed, and that is what keeps me going.
Alongside Stylez by Slim, I’ve launched several passionate projects: House of Colorz, my professional vegan hair color line; Braided Bodega, a braided wig collection; Stylez by Slim Essentials, my line of hot tools; Bougie Aesthetics, an online boutique showcasing the trendiest products; and a growing cooking venture, The Baddest Eatz, that allows me to share my love for food and hospitality.
Building on these ventures, I’m currently laying the groundwork for a much bigger vision: The Beauty Tower: Luxury Wellness Hub, a 50-floor commercial building designed to bring beauty, wellness, and community together under one roof. It’s still in the planning stages, but it’s the blueprint of where I see my brand expanding next.
My purpose is simple: to create spaces where people feel cared for, inspired, and fully confident in their own beauty.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the qualities that shaped my journey the most are creativity, connection, and resilience. Creativity has allowed me to craft unique hair experiences that stand out, while building genuine connections with clients has helped me understand their needs and make them feel confident and valued. Resilience and a business mindset have kept me focused, disciplined, and able to grow multiple ventures even when challenges arise. For those starting out, my advice is to practice your craft relentlessly, listen and empathize with the people you serve, and most importantly stay consistent! always remember, baby steps still allow you to move forward.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I think it’s very important to go all in on your strengths, to really polish your craft and be known for what you do best. At the same time, it’s just as important to work on areas where you feel less confident or need guidance. Starting out, I took a lot of online one-on-one classes with hairstylists across the United States, the UK, and Nigeria. These sessions helped me learn new techniques and elevate my work. I also learned that I don’t know it all, and it’s okay to ask for help; there are people out there willing to share their knowledge. Reaching out, asking for tips, and learning from others has been a huge part of my growth. Focusing on your strengths is key, but actively improving your weaker areas can take your work and your success to the next level.
