We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Faiz Nazary a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Faiz, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
From my father. He built a successful bread bakery through hard work and sweat (literally, those ovens are hot!) I saw him day in and day out baking, managing, deliveries, calls, etc and I won’t forget that during summers working at the bakery. It was called Dallas Gourmet Bakery. It wasn’t just him, all the employees spent many hours making the bread by hand or baking it by hand. I saw how hard they worked too. After he passed away, it was my turn to take care of my mom. Moms can be expensive LOL, but I had to find extra avenues to earn extra money to support her, as well. I had a cushy professional job, but after covid, things became super expensive. I got another 2 jobs so I worked 2-3 jobs at a time for 1.5 years. Then I got let go, since I wasn’t allowed to have simultaneous jobs which is when I founded roofing sales. I tried it, I liked it and still am doing it today. Thanks dad for the entrepreneurial spirit!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
For a good part of my life, I was socially awkward and didn’t understand social cues. Fast foward to 2017, a friend of mine who was socially tuned helped me with it. Then after spending several years putting myself out there to become more socially apt, I wanted a more social job. I was looking into becoming an event/wedding planner, bartender or club promoter in Las Vegas but then covid happened, I stuck to my banking job. Fast forward 3 years, no jobs, this was my opportunity again to search a social job
After getting let go of my cushy jobs while working remotely in Mexico, I had to figure out a new income stream. I wasn’t only supporting myself, but my mom too. I was following a fellow Afghan on ig who was in roofing and I was always interested in a social job. I tried it, I enjoyed the socializing aspect of the job, as well as helping people. Once I figured the roofing process, I decided to start my own roofing company, Contour Roofing. Its tough work when starting out on your own, but I figured out my niche. Now, I don’t just help homeowners get their property back in order, I donate 10% of my profits and time to volunteerism. After the U.S. left Afghanistan in 2021, girls weren’t able to go to school which is one of the areas I like to donate, as well as Equest, a local therapeutic horse riding place for autistic kids. Pretty much, I do it all for the kids.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Tough to narrow to just three, but I’d say dealing well with rejection, adaptable, and focus. In sales, you have to be okay with rejection. Thanks to my rejections in the past…colleges, jobs, social groups, girls, I was a perfect fit for door-to-door sales. For every no, I am one step closer to a yes. If you can’t face rejection well in everyday life, it’ll mess with your mind and confidence. Being adaptable is important because when things go wrong, you’ll be calm for any situation. For example, covid, while others complained, got depressed or anxiety, I kept my meditation practice going which helped me be okay with the current situation. I found hobbies, such as creating art to keep my mind stimulated. Focus is required for anything you want to do, sports, hobbies, college, work. If one wants to hone a skill or build a business, one requires focus. Focus leads to hard work which is where my life is at now, 100% focused on growing my business.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My mom is the one who really wanted me to go to college, SMU – Go Mustangs! My parents never went, but she thought that was something important. She didn’t care too much what I studied, she just wanted me to get an education. Since they never went, they didn’t know the process so I just copied what the smart kids did in high school which worked! Luckily I went to a good high school where many students knew the process thanks to their parents. Its all about who you surround yourself with. Thanks to SMU and the banking career that followed, I learned how one should be around homeowners which helps me till this day with my roofing company.
