We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Fanicia Rogers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Fanicia, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
Being the youngest of 4 children, my mother and father provided a safe, calm, fun, and stable home for us. As a child, all my needs were met, and I lived a good life. After I became a teenager/young adult, I realized that we were not rich and that my mom and dad sacrificed a lot just to make sure we were comfortable. I have gone through some trials in my life that I thought I would not be able to make it through but with my upbringing and being grounded in my faith, I made it! Many times I have thought about those obstacles and how hard they were to cross but then realized that someone, somewhere was dealing with something more tragic or devastating than what I was going though, so I should just be thankful and grateful for what I had and to use that trial as a stepping stone to keep moving along.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I love crafting! I started this journey with me sitting next to my mom as she sewed in her spare time and watching my dad draw and paint pictures. This sparked my interest and I started to imitate what they were doing. Although I am not very good at any of those hobbies, I did learn to create and make different crafts. During my school years, I would hand make items such as bracelets and buttons to sell to my schoolmates for $1. I continued crafting here and there until the first cutting machine came on the market. I purchased it and started personalizing items for gifts. This evolved into my business “Created by Cheron”. I create items that are personalized for the customer. I do not specialize in one single craft, I really try to do a little bit of it all!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say thinking outside of the box, being organized and being business minded would be three areas that were most impactful in my journey. My advice to someone early in their journey is to stay the course. There will be others that are more or equally talented as you. Create ways that will set you apart from the others. If you are going to run a business, be business minded. Keep your business functioning as a business. Charge what you charge and do not let people take advantage of you. If they are not willing to pay your price, kindly decline their business and move on. It’s ok. Keep working. Another “paying” customer will come.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The number one challenge that I am facing today is time management. I have a full time job, I am a mom of 3 young men, I am a wife and I craft in my spare time. There is just not enough time! LOL! I have so many hobbies that sometimes my business is not always my top priority. I am working to dedicate one day a week to craft and to finish unfinished projects.
