Meet Farai Gotora

We recently connected with Farai Gotora and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Farai with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I get my work ethics from my circumstances. For much of my life I have been in situations where waiting for things to happen or change on their own was not an option. I’ve had to take action towards my goals and that is still the case. The goals themselves have shifted from time to time but I’ve always had to make the time and put in effort for things I’ve wanted.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am a creative person at heart and I express this creativity through writing mainly.

I write short stories, comedy sketches, nonfiction opinion pieces and jokes which I perform on stage as a stand up comedian.

Writing is very important to me as it allows me to form worlds through words and this in itself is enjoyable. I am able to ignite conversation amongst people, make them laugh, or take them on a fantastic journey through the work that I do. Holding people’s attention and making them feel a wide range of emotions in a world so full of stimuli is something I find very satisfying and rewarding.

I’ve been performing stand up comedy for 7 years and writing for even longer.
I am always seeking new opportunities to share my work with all who care to receive
it.

You can check out my website (www.faraigotora.com) for my latest stories which I write and post for fun. I also post my schedule and other events I am a part of there. Excited to have you take a look
at what it is I do.

I can also be found on Instagram where I post silly pictures and memes from time to time. I think it’s important not to take myself too seriously all the time.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Being an observer of my own life was paramount and most impactful in my journey. The creative path wasn’t always something encouraged or nurtured so I wasn’t even aware that I was talented to pursue such things. At a certain point in my life I was able to realize that my brain was highly imaginative and some of the unrest I felt in my being stemmed from this unmet need to create. Once I started creating, it seemed clear that I’d found what I needed to do.

Secondly I’d say the art of listening. Because I was never formally educated in the “proper” way of art making, I did things through instinct…What felt right or funny to me. Along my journey I’ve gotten feedback from fellow comics and audiences which has helped me see areas that I can improve in and this has been very helpful.

Lastly, persistence has been key. There are thousands of people that do what I do and the business is serious. I had and have to exercise discipline and persistence to get work and ultimately get to be my best at what I do. It’s not always easy but because I want it, I’ll work for it.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

I think it’s important to invest time and resources in improving areas I’m not as strong at in order to get incrementally better.

As far as my stand up comedy career goes, I never wanted or expected to be a comedian growing up. I kind of stumbled into it because I had a way of writing that lended itself to joke writing. As such, I personally consider myself a writer first and a performer second.

However, I love stand up comedy and have my unique presence on stage. I still want to get better, though. I am currently taking improv classes to help me with being adaptable with many situations thrown my way on stage. I want to be more uncomfortable with chaos and the unknown which will
make me an overall better performer.
