Meet Farhan Khan

We recently connected with Farhan Khan and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Farhan, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

We are a partnership, a couple of creatives that have fulfilled a need in our community by creating a blend of eastern music and western music.
Some people call this style of music “fusion”, however, we call it culturally blended music. We give it our best effort creating positive, sublime, uplifting music. Often we perform for Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jewish and Sikh weddings ceremonies bringing families together in love and compassion. One could say, with our partnership in music and love we have created our purpose.

We are inspired by Bollywood movies, world groove music and well known world music artists such as Ali Akbar Khan, Ravi Shankar and Lata Mangeshkar. Other artists who have inspired us include Louis Armstrong, Lady Gaga, Ella Fitzgerald, The Black Pumas, Sia, Clare Means and Thievery Corporation.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Flash Sitar is a duo uniting artists Farhan Khan, sitar player and Fontain Riddle, musician, vocalist, and composer.
We compose original music blending multicultural musical instruments including the sitar, tanpura, claviola, bouzouki, organic & electronic grooves and voice in several languages including Hindi, Spanish and English.

Throughout our career together we have had several exciting collaborations.
Our sitar version of the Eagles song Hotel California was recently featured on a Putumayo Records compilation album called Lounge World.

Farhan’s hypnotic sitar can be experienced on the Ministry album called Moral Hygiene on the song Broken System.

Our original song Eastern Breeze is part of the music soundtrack for the movie The Con is On featuring Uma Therman, Tim Roth, Alice Eve, Sofia Vergara, and Maggie Q.

We have several live events coming up in Southern California.

On October 19th and 26th, 5pm-9pm we will be performing at the Universal City Hilton, Five on the Hill.

On October 20th, 7pm we will be featured live on the radio with Mystic Pete, KXLU 88.9 for a celebration of Diwali.
Diwali is the Festival of Lights, in deeper meaning is victory over darkness, knowledge over ignorance.

On December 13th, 14th, and 15th in Laguna Hills 5pm-8pm we will be performing for a festival called Journey to Bethlehem, a costumed historical immersion. It is an opulently fun family event offering camel rides, centurions on horses, basket weavers and other historically accurate craftsmen and showmen.
Our part in this event is to evoke the emotions and sounds of the silk road through music.
We have performed for this event the past five years in a row.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three qualities and skills we have developed through our journey working together have been:

We work mindfully creating an uplifting and fun vibe with our live performances.

We have an eclectic style yet we draw our audience into our world by performing familiar melodies with our exotic instruments.

We bring people to an inspired and more hopeful mood than they started with. This has been the response from our listeners every show since we figured out how to get out of our own way when performing. We perform to create positive vibes.

The advice I would give to my fellow musical performers is; The performance is not about you. The performance is about being a conduit for others to embody a lighter spirit through the music and art that you present. You have to be genuine.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

We are looking to collaborate with a creative entity who understands our purpose and who can help us present our music to wider audiences.
