We recently connected with Faruq Abdul-Basir and have shared our conversation below.
Faruq, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My love for the art form we call hip hop. I love music in general and always wanted to be a part of making quality music.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I create musical collages. I occasionally lend my voice to said collages. I have produced for several artists over the years and have my own solo project which is currently out now.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My knowledge of all genres of music has made me a quality composer, in my opinion. I don’t limit my thinking, in terms of what I take in musically. I don’t limit myself in my creative process. A lot of different things and people have inspired me and I draw from all of that.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
Yes, the challenge of developing a new sound that no one else is doing….and making it sound good haha
