Meet Farzad Golpayegani

We were lucky to catch up with Farzad Golpayegani recently and have shared our conversation below.

Farzad, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

I grew up in an artistic family and attended art schools, so I was always in touch with other creatives. Still, my art and music style was very different from many others. The surreal and often darker themes of my visual art, and the combination of traditional and heavy metal in my music, felt like they weren’t understood or appreciated much. Early in my journey and as an independent artist, this was quite disturbing. But over time, I realized that the amount of appreciation I receive doesn’t necessarily reflect the quality and value of my work.

I’ve learned that while my work might not get much exposure within my local community, it can be valued on a much wider scale. The internet has played a significant role in connecting me with those who enjoy and appreciate my music and art. As I’ve grown older and gained a better understanding of an artistic career, I’ve come to see that while positive feedback is heartwarming, the most important thing is that I’m satisfied with my creation. If I’m happy with what I create and ready to share it with everyone, then I consider myself successful.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a Los Angeles-based visual artist and musician with a degree in Graphic Design. Apart from my art and music activities, I work full-time as an Art Director, handling a variety of design-related projects within the marketing team.

My music is Progressive Metal and Fusion. I have released nine solo albums, as well as several EPs and collaborations.

My art is mainly surreal, and I work in digital as well as traditional media. I will hold a painting and drawing exhibition in July 2024 at Start Los Angeles Gallery. My latest digital paintings and drawings, and my last acrylic on canvas collection will be on display at this event.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Consistency, staying positive, and valuing my physical and mental health have played an important role in my progress. Whether in art or music, I have always been passionate about enhancing my skills and not settling for what I have achieved. Another big factor is time management. I make sure to spend a lot of time honing my craft. From the beginning, I have been clear about my priorities and never wasted time on things that aren’t beneficial in the long term.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

That would be time management and creating a balance between my full-time work in one hand, and art and music on the other. What I do to overcome the obstacle is to periodically spend my time on either art, or music. I usually work based on specific project or collection. For instance at the moment I’m completing my last painting and drawing collection, and once that is done, probably by the end of the year, I will start working on my tenth solo music album, which will take at least a year to complete.
