We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Fat Dreadz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Fat, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
You know it’s so funny my media name is “Fat Dreadz” I’ve been a bigger guy majority of my life and got teased for it but it came to a point in my life where I just didn’t care anymore and I made that the joke. So fast forward some years I literally have people in the crowd screaming my name “Fat Dreadz”. So my point is that you have got to learn to be comfortable in your own skin and know that whatever you bring to the table holds its own weight. Your you for a reason and I’m me for a reason we all have special things about us you just have to figure out what it is and start applying it so you can better yourself. So I love being me, being me has gotten me into doors I’ve never thought I could go through. So be yourself 100% of the time it will get you places every time because if somebody wants to have a Fat Dreadz show they will literally have to book Fat Dreadz with no if, and, or buts, and that’s why being unique can get you so far.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I started making music in 2018 after I dropped out of college, I had recorded a few songs before I went to school but I started pursuing it actually after I dropped out. Making music is most definitely a different experience from what you would call normal, I also twitch stream and have my own YouTube channel with vlogs and other cool stuff, so I’m an all-around entertainer hopefully I get into acting one day also.
I recently just dropped a Hip Hop/Rap project in March of 2023 called “Bad Boy Sad Boy” on all platforms it is most definitely my best-released work thus far. I wanna give a huge shoutout to my manager Tree and the rest of my team for helping me put it together. I am a part of a team called Block Bandit Entertainment LLC. I met another artist named Oso Muka back in 2022 and it was great energy we were both eager to work so I joined their team and I’m happy to be a part of something great.
I’ve always been a music head but if you told me this would be my job 10 years ago I would have said you are crazy, but I’ve learned to fall in love with the craft and the process and just enjoy the ride and see where it takes you. So Fat Dreadz has a lot more in store so stay tuned!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Find Your Why & Save your money.
People always ask me “How do you keep going” and it’s because I’ve found my why, once you find your why nothing else matters. you know the reason behind everything you doing and your focus on the bigger picture. I would be lying if I said it’s easy but you just have to focus on what your end goal is and stay focused on your why.
My advice is to find your why before you even get started if you don’t have a why you won’t finish anything in life.
I know we’ve all heard the saying “Save your money because your money will save you” Well its true so many unplanned circumstances are gonna come your way and your gonna have to be prepared and the only way to be prepared is to at least have something saved up when the problem occurs.
Lastly I want to include gratitude, start your day off showing appreciation for the things you have, and the things you have done, its always somebody wishing they were in your position so be grateful for where you are in life. The more gratitude the more life will bless you.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always open to collaborating with people especially if the vibes are on point. It could be music, a podcast, an interview, a YouTube video, or just content in general I’m down for it all
