We recently connected with Fatiha Alam and have shared our conversation below.
Fatiha, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I grew up as the first born daughter in a Bengali-American household. Growing up in a cultural household, there is typically a path carved out for you that you are expected to follow. I was always told that I have to go into STEM growing up because this is what would make me money and impress my family. I knew these expectations came from my parents wanting a better life for me, but I wanted so much more than just a traditional pathway since I was a kid. I wanted a lot of things that were outside of our cultural norm, which caused me and my parents to bump heads. Our relationship was very severed throughout high school.
I was always ambitious since I was young. I had a Youtube channel that was becoming popular at my high school. I spent hours teaching myself how to edit on Imovie. Eventually, I let my social media dream go because I thought the traditional pathway is the only thing that can bring sustainable success. I went to college, and I majored in Public Health. I absolutely loved Public Health, but that didnt change the creative parts of me that were itching for an outlet. I started an organization for women of color. I joined organizations where I could help create. I became a model and walked the largest student run fashion show. I hosted large events for our campus. During this time, me and my parents bumped heads more about my future. They had high expectations of who I should marry, what I should wear, where I should be spending my time, and their expectations of my life after college. I continuously fought for myself and the future I deserved. I knew I could not live a life to please everyone else except myself. I felt called to things that no one in my family has seen before.
After graduating college with my Bachelor’s and Master’s at 21, I hit a rock. I thought there was going to be so much more excitement to starting my 9-5 job in my field. Life humbled me. I felt that I was not living to my full potential. It caused such a deep depression that took me months to work through. I had no idea what was next for me. I decided to revisit my social media dreams. I wanted to be successful in this space. I decided in December 2023 that I was going to give it everything that I had. I started to create again. I spent hours teaching myself how to edit, and I was great at it. I had specific visions for videos depending on the niche, and I used my talent to bring my ideas to life. It felt so rewarding. I started to get noticed by different brands, and I started partnering with them. Over time, I started to feel that I was not being authentic to myself. I was posting about the things that every girl posts about, essentially following a trend. I specifically had a gift of inspiring people. I knew I was not using my voice in entirety. That led me to creating my podcast geared towards inspiring hope and faith in women for their purpose, with the goal of setting ourselves apart to walk our own path. I started talking more about these topics and my faith on my Instagram and Tiktok videos too. I saw how people were waiting for more content like this. I have received so many messages about how people feel more confident and feel more inspired to walk in their purpose. This is how I found my purpose.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a content creator, I work every day to create quality, uplifting, feel good content across my platforms. I love partnering with honest brands to promote products that have intentional campaigns behind them. I am also an actress. I recently signed with an agency in Cincinnati. I have gotten the opportunity to be in an episode of Cincinnati Refined and a short film called Cold Hand. Last but not least, I am a podcaster. I write my podcast episodes with intention of creating every message with the purpose of inspiring faith and uplifting women to be confident in their purpose.
The most exciting and special thing about all of these focuses is how big I get to dream. There is no limit to the creativity. I get to create a vision, a narrative, or a story and bring it to life. It is so fruitful being able to create a single concept into a reality. People are told too often that their dreams are not achievable. For me, dreaming big without even having all the steps carved out has led me to success. Faith drives me. I truly do think everyone is capable to achieve their wildest dreams if they believe it to be true and take small steps day by day.
I am working on a website right now where I will offer services to make dedicated video content and/or UGC content for brands and organizations. I will also offer an editing package for existing content.
I am focusing on increasing engagement for my podcast, booking more roles in tv/film, and creating intentional content for my platforms. I have plans to start a Youtube channel soon as well.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Seek wisdom and knowledge. It’s okay to not know everything about the things that interest you at first. There is a surplus of information on the internet. Leverage the knowledge that is already out there instead of reinventing the wheel. Take intentional time to do research and to teach yourself. Reach out to people in your network and set up conversations.
2. Take everything one day at a time. It can become overwhelming if you try to do everything at once. Break up tasks day by day. Don’t burn yourself out before the dream has even gotten a chance to get off the ground. Take the pressure off of yourself to build Rome in a day. It is going to require patience and endurance.
3. The dream is not as intimidating as you think. Your favorite role model used to be a “regular person” just like you. They just had a dream that they never gave up on. Don’t give up no matter how crazy the dream seems.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am definitely looking for more opportunities to collaborate in all areas. I am looking to collaborate with brands and businesses to create dedicated and/or UGC videos for them. I also offer editing services for existing UGC videos. I would love to have more guests on my podcast. I am looking for people who want to share their stories that show how they overcame a cultural obstacle or a hard time in their life with the result of them walking in their purpose. I am also available for bookings for shoots and commercials/films. If anyone is interested in collaborating, please reach out to me via email hello@fatihaalam.com or instagram @tihaalam.
