We were lucky to catch up with Favage recently and have shared our conversation below.
Favage, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
All my life, I had no insecurities, but what made me insecure about my music are either new emerging artists blowing up on the internet, me thinking that I’m not good enough or thinking that people are way cooler than me. I hate the fact that I’m insecure about new artists blowing up because I shouldn’t feel that way and should view them as an inspiration for me to become the next new thing. Although, to help my self-esteem up, I look back on my music over the years and say “damn, I really made music for that long” and realized that I’m totally different than everybody, which both thoughts pushed me to continue making music and continue being different. I think it’s about looking back on how much you accomplished your goals, how long you been working on your dream for and learn how to accept yourself for who you are.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi! My name is Fatima, I go Favage as my artist name! I am an 19-year-old rapper, songwriter, and producer from the lovely city of Nashville! My position is quite interesting because I’m in a male-dominated industry as a young, disabled Latina, but the exciting part about is I’m very creative and passionate with what I do! After 4 years of making music, I will release my collaborative EP called “6 figures” in the next month of August or so depending how much I got left (I’m very close to finishing it). However, There’ll be definitely a music video for my upcoming single called “code purple” dropping in August, too! I’m very excited to show y’all what’s in the vault!!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Patience, commitment and creativeness. If you are working on a project, keep in mind to be patient because you can’t always set a date to show everyone your art, BUT you have to stay committed to reach your goal. Sometimes I have to postpone a release date for a project that’s still unfinished whether it’ll be making a few songs, doing a final mix on a song or the artwork for the project, but I’ve learned that it’s not the end of the world if I don’t release it when I want to. There’s gotta be room for everything, you know? Don’t be afraid to let your creativeness come to life, even if you think your ideas are crazy. I’m a futurist so I like to plan ahead my future projects. I list some ideas for songs. Even I got a whole list of album ideas with a bunch of crazy amount of songs that I like to make for my albums!
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My music mentor, Sean. One day at my local library, I was scrolling through events held there on the computer and I saw this music production workshop held every Monday afternoon at the teens section at the library, so I asked my mom to go there and she did, and that’s where I met Sean. The first time I met him, he was super nice and taught me how to work on Logic. From then on, I would show up every Monday to gain more knowledge and made my earliest projects along the way. Sean has taught me how to produce, how to record my communication device and to edit them, and to mix. Over the few years, we were close buddies. I talked to him what’s been going on with my life and goals and he would give his advice on them. I was devastated when he left for a new job, but he said to keep writing for him and I’ve been doing more of that since he said it. Since then, I’ve been struggling a little bit with mixing and mastering, but I’ve taught myself how to do them. Now, I can make my own songs without any help. I’ve achieved my goal! Thank you Sean for being the best influence on me, hope you’re doing well!! I miss you.
