Meet Federica Carlino

We recently connected with Federica Carlino and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Federica , thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?

Through putting myself in other people’s shoes. I’ve attended different film courses that explored every single aspect of filmmaking and it was very important for me, as I feel like my collaborators feel free to express their needs and deliver exactly what I was expecting, as communications get easier and faster each time.

I’ve been more focused on castings as a casting director in the last few years and Covid kinda broke that constant safe space I had with it as a job.

I’ve started my journey at Met Film School in London in acting and I feel like I’m on the right path, even if I might don’t embrace the acting life after this, I already feel enriched in knowledge as I am exploring the actors’ agenda in person. I’ve attended acting courses before and I have a few credits as an actress, but this course is definitely the best one in this field. I feel like if I have to communicate with actors in the future, I will definitely feel more confident. That also applies to every field that I was able to explore in depth, through my academic life, for sure, but also with my experience on set.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I was born in Milan, Italy. My family moved around Europe and Asia for work, so I had the opportunity to meet new cultures. I grew up in the Netherlands, then moved back to Italy for most of my education, ‘ve also studied in London at Richmond Upon Thames College. After high school, I’ve studied filmmaking, acting, photography, editing, VFX, and makeup in Milan and makeup prosthetics in Rome with Dario Argento’s makeup artist, Sergio Stivaletti. I worked with Mediaset a TV an Italian mass media company which is the largest commercial broadcaster in the country. I moved to Los Angeles in 2016 and I’m a New York Film Academy BFA graduate. I had the opportunity to work with Netflix, NBC and Universal Pictures. Then worked in the film industry in Abu Dhabi as well. I have experience in directing, casting, writing, and acting. I then decide to found Morgana Film Festival in 2023 as I want to showcase indie talents around the world. Two ears ago I discovered that I’m among the most awarded filmmakers in Italy and is featured in the IMDb book dedicated to Italian Filmmakers. and it was such an honor. This year I moved to London to attend Met Film School and get a master in acting with amazing teachers that are incredibly experienced in the industry. It will serve my directing skills, my casting sessions and my acting range as I occasionally get to act.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I started as an actor, but at home I was always up to film anything that crossed my path. I fell in love with directing when I was very young. Casting comes with it. When I started to cast actors for my projects, I immediately felt an incredible accomplishment. People started to ask me the name of my casting director, because they loved the choices I made, or how I casted the same character in different instances of time, (young vs adult versions) or family members that definitely looked related. I felt great telling them that it was me that took care of that aspect, so I started to do it for other people and I felt the same incredible fulfilment that I would’ve felt for one of my own projects. I also love writing, I am currently pitching different projects. So I would say directing, casting director and writing skills are my main ones for sure.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

This applies to everything I do, from directing to casting, to acting,…The ideal people to work with are drama free people, creatives that don’t panic while facing difficulties, that stay focus, that have your same desire to create, make something unique and that genuinely love what they do. I love people that give you a feedback without sounding condescending, but with the aim of producing something great together. I always crave a teamwork relationship with my peers and when I see that they want the same thing, it’s the best feeling ever, and it’s definitely visible in the outcome of our projects. So in conclusion I’d say someone easy to work with, professional, but also fun to work with, creative and in love with their craft.
