Meet Felipe Mucci

We were lucky to catch up with Felipe Mucci recently and have shared our conversation below.

Felipe, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
When I decided to move from Brazil to the US to pursue my dream, leaving my family and everyone I knew behind, I made a deal with myself. I would never give up. I would do my best to achieve what I set out to do. Every birthday, every get together, every family dinner I miss reminds me that I cannot give up. It’s not easy being away from your loved ones, so if I’m to do that, I might as well try my hardest to make it worth it. My resilience comes from the fact that I know left Brazil for a reason, so I will do my best to honor that decision.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a television and feature film writer & director. I moved to Los Angeles 11 years ago to go to the American Film Institute and stayed after graduating to pursue my dream of working in Los Angeles. Since graduating I have written, directed and produced tv shows and films for Netflix, Warner Bros and HBO Max.

I love the idea of being able to tell stories and explore human nature. Through my scripts I’m able to dive deep into how people behave and what makes them tick. Why someone falls in love someone else, why someone would hurt another human being, why someone would leave everything behind to achieve their dreams. As a writer I get to explore these questions and explore what makes us act the way we do.

My latests film tells the story of a woman who finds herself in a police station and being told she has just ran over someone. Throughout the story, she learns that things are not exactly what they look like and that she will have to overcome her fears to get out of there. The film should be out within the next few months.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most important quality is without a doubt people skills. Being able to make people feel included and respected. The work is better and more efficient when everyone is working towards the same goal. The other skill that I would say are indispensable is hardworking. To make it in any area of entertainment, working hard towards what you want is a must. Things rarely come easily in life. And the last thing I would say is being nice to people. Sounds easy but in an environment where ego takes front stage, being nice can help you go along way.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
There were two things that my parents did that drastically changed the trajectory of my career. The first one was telling me to never give up. That I would have ups and downs and that what mattered was how I acted within those moments. And the seconds was when my mother sold her car so I could make a short film for school. That short film ended up changing the course of my career and opening doors that I could never have imagined. Because of it, I was later abled to repay the favor.
