Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Felton Langlois Jr. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Felton, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Great question. I listen to the radio every single day. I’ve never stopped listening to the radio since the very beginning. Now when I say listen, I really do mean “listen.” It’s important to absorb every aspect of what transpires within a song. Whether it’s the beat that speaks to me or the arrangement of the track, I’m typically listening with virgin ears. This helps to consume detailed specifics of the song. The composition itself, speaks to me in a way that the lyrics sort of narrate a story of some kind. In that regard, I am afforded the opportunity to understand and connect with the artist. Considering I’ve been producing, engineering and recording since 1986, it remains crucial, the fact that I continue to evolve musically and more importantly creatively. Fortunately, I’ve been able to stretch myself in even the most audacious approaches to elevate. Particularly, producing for genres such as Hip-Hop, Bounce, Country, Rock n’ roll, Soul Blues and Southern Soul. I’ve produced at least three rock bands, which was a heaping mound of fun. Interesting enough, I started producing Soul Blues and Southern Soul primarily in collaboration with singer-songwriter CoCo Wade back in 2015 and have been graced with some of the best responses off all-time. Most recently, we released a hit single titled “I Got My Hands Up.” Merely seven days after its release in May 2024, the song began to air in the UK, Canada, Montreal, Quebec and countless states within the United States. The work she and I co-produced has streamed over 21 million times and remained consistent for nearly a decade. This serves as a prime example for how I’ve not only, maintained creativity, but as well far exceed industry expectations!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I fell in love with music at the early age of about 8 years old. Learning to play piano as a child truly inspired me to connect with the art of music. A few of my greatest inspirations back then were Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder. As an industry professional I got my start in New Orleans after opening a recording studio in my parents garage back in 1989. New Orleans had about 300 record labels at that time. I was charging $10 an hour for recording sessions. Everybody who’s anybody recorded with me. Before long, I started making beats which led to me serving as both the engineer and producer. Throughout my career, I’ve recorded over 350 albums while working in collaboration with major movers and shakers like Cash Money Records, No Limit Records, Take Fo’ Records and of course, a host of indie labels. SmallWorld Studio is still making moves. Expansions are on the rise, as I am now branching out into film and commercial music production.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’d have say, three of the most important qualities, skills and areas of knowledge I possess are creativity with the realms of music production, music arrangement and professional recording.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes, absolutely. I’ve set a goal of securing at least fifty additional albums within the next five years. I’m open to working with industry professionals and talents ranging in all walks of life. My strengths reside in both music and film . Particularly, opportunities such as licensing deals, partnerships and collaborations of all kind. I recently worked in production on the Netflix award-winning film, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” featuring Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman and a slew of other industry greats. My role on the astonishing project was in association with being a production professional and recording specialist. Movie credits can be referenced on my IMDB profile. My focus at this point in my career leans towards working with serious artists, creatives and industry leaders seeking to innovate and elevate. I have been gifted with a unique way of bringing the best out of talents. It’s all about commitment and teamwork.
