Meet Fernanda Martinez

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Fernanda Martinez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Fernanda, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I believe we all struggle with imposter syndrome at some point in our life, for some of us it is a persisting feeling, invariably present in our daily life. I wouldn’t say I have overcome it, instead I have learned how to dominate that spiral and harmful mindset of self-doubt and trust my abilities to achieve higher results.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Fernanda Martinez. a self taught artist based in Oakland, CA. I create colorful abstract paintings highly inspired by nature and my surroundings. The most exciting part about my art practice is the opportunity to create everyday and explore new ways to express myself and my emotions. I believe that my art allows me to communicate what I’m not able to express with words and that motivates me to push my art into new directions and find new paths to the unknown.

My favorite part of doing this job is seeing the impact that art has in the space where it exists and how people benefit from it in their everyday lives.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One aspect that has distinguished my business from others is that it has broaden into different products and expressions; some of my artworks have been transferred into packaging, fabrics, stationery products etc.

I think that persistency is a fundamental aspect of my journey. When I started to take my art practice to a more serious level, I had to deal with rejection as part of the process to become a professional artist and I’m proud of the way I’ve learned with it over the years.

Another quality of my work is that it is appealing to many audiences and I believe that this is a consequence of my mexican heritage. I grew up surrounded by textiles. colorful streets. magnificent architecture, to mention a few, and all these things have a strong influence in my style.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When i feel overwhelmed and exhausted I force myself to rest. This might sound like an obvious activity; however, when you’re running your own business, working overtime and stretching yourself thin are common activities and very harmful ones.

My advice to folks that are early in their journey is to do activities that are not only work and that make you prioritize time for them. It’s very normal to feel burned, but it is important to find the correct work/life balance to sustain your art practice.
