We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Fernando Tranquilino a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Fernando, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
As a street taco vendor who built their business from the ground up and is now fully booked months in advance, overcoming imposter syndrome starts with recognizing that your success isn’t luck—it’s the result of your hard work, consistency, and talent. The feeling of not being “legit” is just that—a feeling, not a fact. You’ve earned every loyal customer, every booking, and every compliment through your hustle and dedication. That work ethic was passed down from my mother, a single mom of five who worked tirelessly to make sure we always had what we needed. Watching her grind day in and day out in the kitchen and hospitality industry inspired my love for cooking and taught me the meaning of resilience. My journey didn’t follow the traditional path, but it’s rooted in purpose and passion. I’m not an imposter—I’m a reflection of the strength I come from, and I’ve earned my place here.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
At TaconMadres, we genuinely enjoy what we have to offer each of our customers. Whether it’s a catered event, where we handle the heavy lifting so our host and their guests can relax and enjoy each other’s company over great food, or a pop-up or market where we serve both loyal regulars and first-timers, we pour the same passion into every taco. Each event is special to us—because every environment, every crowd, and every moment is unique. We don’t just serve food; we help create memorable experiences, one taco at a time.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As a first-generation American and first-generation business owner in the U.S., this journey has been deeply personal. I’ve learned that you need much more than just three qualities to succeed—haha—but if I had to choose, the main three would be consistency, humility, and customer service skills. Those are the pillars that keep me grounded and growing. One of the best pieces of advice I can give to someone just starting out is this: keep going and stay true to yourself. Keep going when things aren’t going your way, and stay true to your customers, your team, and the vision that inspired you in the first place. Also—keep it simple, and be great at that one thing you do. For us, it’s tacos. We focus on making the best tacos we can, every single time, because that’s what we love and what we’re known for. And through it all, never forget where you came from. Your roots, your story, and your journey are what make your business real, relatable, and resilient.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
And through it all, I’ve learned that one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make in life is choosing the right partner. I was lucky enough to find mine. My wife—my partner in life and in business—has been there since day one. In fact, she’s the reason this whole journey started. We needed a taquero for her graduation party… and I ended up being the taquero. From that moment on, she believed in what we could build together, even before I fully did. Every single day, she pushes me to grow, to be better, and to dream bigger. She manages our calendars, bookings, accounting, social media—you name it, she handles it. She’s the heart of this brand, and she continues to take TaconMadres to a whole other level. This isn’t just my dream—it’s our dream, and we’re living it together.
