Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Feven Getachew. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Feven, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I draw my resilience from multiple sources. My parents have always been a constant source of support, while prayer helps me stay grounded. My sisters, though often amused by the number of ideas I come up with, never hesitate to support me, offering advice and suggestions whenever needed.
In addition, I’ve worked on strengthening my mindset over time through various means—whether it’s reading books, listening to podcasts, or attending events. One particularly memorable experience was attending a Tony Robbins three-day event. During this event, we had the chance to walk on hot coals. That moment was both surprising and eye-opening, demonstrating the incredible power of the mind. The belief that we could walk unharmed made me realize that with the right mindset, we can handle anything life throws at us.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
We run a coffee company called Afro Sheba™ Coffee, born from my deep love for coffee and a desire to share both the beverage and its rich history with fellow coffee lovers. Coffee has its roots in Ethiopia, where it was discovered between 750–800 AD by a goat herder named Khaldi, who noticed his goats became unusually energetic after eating certain berries. According to legend, Khaldi brought these berries to a local monk, and from there, coffee’s journey began.
In Ethiopia, coffee is more than just a drink—it’s a way of life. Coffee ceremonies are a cherished tradition, where families gather to brew coffee, share snacks like popcorn, and enjoy quality time together. We’ve included a description of this ceremony on the back of our coffee bags, so when someone purchases our coffee, they get a taste of Ethiopia’s culture, and it transports them to a more relaxed and mindful state.
I get especially thrilled when we sign new accounts or when someone tries Ethiopian coffee for the first time through our brand. It’s not just about the coffee; it’s an opportunity to share a piece of Ethiopian history and culture along with a fantastic cup of coffee.
We also take our social responsibility seriously. Our coffee is sourced from small farmers and cooperatives, ensuring that we support local communities while maintaining the quality and authenticity of Ethiopian coffee. It’s a privilege to offer something meaningful while making a positive impact.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Resilience: In both life and business, things don’t always go as planned. When setbacks occur, I allow myself to feel the emotions but quickly shift focus to what’s within my control. Once I identify that, I direct my energy toward solving that piece of the puzzle. After things settle, I reflect on what was beyond my control and ask: 1) How can I prevent this issue from arising again? 2) If it’s something essential that I need, how can I either own it or gain easy access to it? My advice is simple—don’t waste time dwelling on things outside your control. Instead, focus on what you can influence and think ahead about how to acquire what you need to grow.
Boundaries: Setting clear boundaries is essential for maintaining balance. Whether it’s in terms of your time, energy, or focus, knowing when to say “no” helps protect your well-being and ensures that you’re prioritizing what truly matters in your journey.
Network, Network, Network: As an introvert, it took me a while to get comfortable attending events and large gatherings. However, networking is crucial for success. Overcoming that initial discomfort is worth it because building meaningful connections can open doors you didn’t even know existed. My advice is to push through the fear of the unknown—go out, meet new people, and enjoy the journey of expanding your network.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
One book that has had a significant impact on my development is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. One of the key lessons that resonated with me is when the monk advises Santiago to be cautious about what he says because the universe is always listening. This teaches the importance of being mindful of your thoughts and words, as they have the power to shape your reality. It’s a reminder that our mindset and focus can either bring us closer to or further from our goals and that we should always stay intentional and aligned with our purpose.
