Meet Feyisayo Anjorin

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Feyisayo Anjorin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Feyisayo below.

Hi Feyisayo, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

In my younger years I was indeed on a quest to be loved and accepted.
However I realised in life that it is better not to be too bothered by the desire to be loved.
I grew up in a home where my siblings and parents helped in building that environment of love; and from there I knew that one can freely be oneself and be loved, despite my flaws and inadequacies I knew that there is still love for me. I knew that I didn’t have to be perfect to be loved, so this helped my self-esteem such that my quest for love did not result in the burden of becoming someone else or something other than my real essence.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a thorough creative soul, I believe in expressing creativity in every aspect of my being, hence as a storyteller, lyricist, songwriter and screenwriter, I want the beauty of the human soul to shine, and sometimes ugliness finds expression so that what is exposed can be healed for the society to find respite from a multitude of ills.
I’ve had limited interactions with the seedy side of the African society in Nigeria and in South Africa. I’ve found out that the world can not be viewed with simplistic lenses. People are inevitably shaped by their experiences, and experiences vary as humanity is diverse.
This has helped me in every aspect of storytelling, to be human, such that I may not understand as much as I should, and I may not agree with a lot of things; but I am inevitably emphatic.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

For the most impact, what has been key has been my imagination
My keen sense of observation and my courage to express myself.

For folks who are in the creative industries I would counsel them to start, to begin the journey of creativity from where they are, from the honesty of their story and the message in their hearts, rather than focus to much on making perfectly beautiful creations

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

I read Steve Biko’s “I Write What I Like”, and I was fascinated by the life of this great anti-apartheid activist, and his rare courage in the face of the culture which seeks to diminish him for just the fact of the colour of his skin.
