Meet Filomena “Mena” Maimone

We were lucky to catch up with Filomena “Mena” Maimone recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Filomena “Mena”, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I am very proud of my work ethic, which I get from my mom, Rocki Maimone. She is a serial entrepreneur who has started various businesses, so I have seen her grind since I was young. She is a businesswoman and Realtor with more than 30 years of experience in sales, marketing, senior housing and real estate. I followed in my mom’s entrepreneurial footsteps by opening my own business, the law firm Maimone Legal PLLC, which focuses on immigration law and estate planning. I always looked up to my mom for her work ethic, and now, she works with me as the senior business manager at Maimone Legal. I’m so fortunate to have her on our team to utilize her decades of business experience. The firm has already grown significantly since its opening in 2023, and I believe our hustle and grit will continue to bring the firm to new heights.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am an attorney and the founder of Maimone Legal, a full-service law firm based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The firm specializes in immigration law and provides personalized solutions and comprehensive support for naturalization, family-based visas, citizenship applications, business investor visas and employment visas. Maimone Legal also specializes in estate planning and asset protection and has a business law branch to provide support to business owners whether they are buying or selling or creating their businesses.

One of the things that makes Maimone Legal special is that it’s run by a mother-daughter team. We complement each other so well in what we have to offer our clients and the firm. Also, we have personally gone through the processes and applications that we are helping our clients navigate, so we are able to give our firsthand insight.

We host free weekly webinars every Monday at 7:30 p.m. ET to teach people about the importance of estate planning. On our webinars, attendees learn about wills and their requirements and specifics for Canadians in Florida, revocable vs. irrevocable trusts and their benefits, cross-border tax considerations, impact of Florida real estate ownership on estate planning, homestead exemption for Canadian property owners in Florida, and more. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I believe my grit, empathy and transparency brought me to where I am today. Attorneys go through a lot, and they must have that grit and “it” factor to push through the obstacles they will ultimately face at some point. However, it’s just as important to be empathetic and truly put yourself in your clients’ shoes and make that human connection. Clients want to see that their attorneys are real people too. I think that my transparency has also been impactful in my journey because it allows me to manage expectations. I tell my clients exactly how it is using my knowledge, facts and research. If there are any challenges that arise, it’s important to talk and work through them with the client and make sure everyone is on the same page. For people who are early in their journey to becoming a lawyer, I would say to find a mentor to show you the ropes. I love mentoring people who are looking to further their education and go into the legal field. It is a tough profession and having a mentor who has gone through what you’re going through is helpful.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I try to practice gratitude and take a moment to remember all the blessings I have received in my life and that I should be grateful for every day. Remembering that the small issues will soon be forgotten helps me get through tough moments. My advice is to do what you are passionate about and it won’t feel like work, nor will you feel as overwhelmed.
