Meet Flor Bromley

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Flor Bromley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Flor , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

As an immigrant in the United States, entering the world of music has meant navigating spaces where I am often the only one who looks like me. However, I’ve learned to see this not as a challenge, but as an opportunity to bring something fresh and unique to the table. My Latin-American roots, bilingualism, and cultural rhythms are central to my identity and the music I create. Being the only one in the room has pushed me to stay true to my voice. I use my immigrant experience not just to inspire my work but to teach children through music that within diversity lies empathy. I believe music is a powerful tool to show kids that, despite our differences, we are all connected. By celebrating our unique cultures, we foster understanding, compassion, and a sense of unity. Navigating the music industry in the U.S. as an immigrant has given me a platform to blend my roots with new influences, creating a musical experience that resonates with families from all walks of life. Staying authentic has allowed me to bridge cultural gaps and make an impact that is both personal and universal.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

As an artist, I feel incredibly fortunate to have carved out a path that allows me to blend my cultural roots with my passion for music and performance. Growing up in Peru, music was always a part of my life. It was a way to express joy, tell stories, and connect with others. When I moved to the United States, I knew I wanted to bring that piece of my heritage with me and share it with the world. What excites me most about my career is how I’ve been able to do just that—merge my Latin-American identity with global sounds to create something that speaks to families and children from all different backgrounds. What makes my artistic journey truly special is the impact it has on young audiences. There’s something magical about seeing children light up when they hear a song in two languages, or when they feel the rhythm of an instrument from another culture. I’ve always believed that music can teach empathy, and I use my platform to show kids that diversity is something to be celebrated. Through my music, I aim to connect them to new cultures, new perspectives, and the idea that we are all part of a larger, beautiful world. For me. every performance feels like a journey where I get to bring people together through rhythm, words, and movement. One of the proudest moments in my career was receiving a Latin GRAMMY® nomination for my album “Aventuras.” It felt like a recognition of everything I’ve poured into my work—my passion for storytelling, my roots, and my love for creating music that has meaning. To have that acknowledged on a global stage was beyond exciting, and it drives me to keep creating more. At the heart of everything I do is a desire to build community. I want my music to reach families everywhere, and I want kids to see themselves in it, whether they speak Spanish, English, or both. I believe that the more we embrace our differences, the closer we become, and that’s a message I want to carry through my music and performances. Being an artist has allowed me to stay true to who I am, while also growing and evolving with each project. Whether I’m performing at a museum, a festival, or a theater, I’m always excited to see how music can bring people together, inspire joy, and create a sense of connection across cultures and generations. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited for what’s to come.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back on my journey, three key qualities stand out as being the most impactful: adaptability, optimism, and persistence. Each of these has played a crucial role in shaping my career and allowing me to navigate challenges along the way. “Adaptability” has been essential, especially as an immigrant entering a new country and a new industry. I’ve had to learn to adjust quickly to new environments, languages, and audiences. The music industry itself is always changing, and being able to pivot and stay flexible has helped me remain relevant and continue growing as an artist. “Optimism” has been my guiding light. When things don’t go as planned—or when obstacles arise—it’s my belief in the possibility of a positive outcome that keeps me moving forward. Whether it’s pushing through a creative block or bouncing back from a setback, optimism allows you to keep going with hope and determination. Finally, “Persistence” is what I would call my “no-quit” mentality. In this industry, there will be plenty of no’s before you get a yes, but those no’s don’t define you. The ability to keep pushing forward, even when doors close, has been one of the most important factors in my success. For anyone just starting out, remember that rejection is part of the process. The key is not to give up. If you believe in what you’re doing, keep going, even when it’s tough. With persistence, you’ll find the right opportunities, and you’ll grow stronger with each step. Developing these qualities takes time and experience, but if you approach your journey with adaptability, optimism, and persistence, you’ll be prepared to face whatever challenges come your way—and you’ll find success in your own unique path.

For anyone early in their journey, my advice is to embrace change and keep an open mind. Be willing to learn from every experience, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Growth often happens in the moments when we’re most stretched.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

Letting me go. The most impactful thing my parents did for me was giving me the freedom to find my own path. Right after high school, they let me experience life as an exchange student in the U.S., trusting me to explore the world on my own. They always said, “You bring children into the world, but they are not yours, they belong to the world.” That mindset shaped their approach to parenting. They never pressured me to follow a set plan; instead, they encouraged me to discover who I was and what I wanted to become. The only thing they asked was for me to have a degree as a fallback plan, which I completed in Peru. After that, they fully supported me, emotionally and financially, when I moved to New York to chase my dreams in music and the arts. Their unwavering belief in me, paired with their optimism, gave me the confidence to pursue my passion, knowing I had a safety net of love and encouragement. It taught me that with support and belief in myself, I could face challenges head-on and continue to push forward, no matter what.
