We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Flyn Costello. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Flyn below.
Hi Flyn , thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
Optimism is a key part of our partnership, Dan is an eternal optimist and continues to reinforce my belief in the work and our mission. We have also use the mantra “why not us!” a philosophy that promotes the self belief that you are capable of doing anything and there is no reason you can’t do it.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Flyn studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and was working as a professional artist when she met Dan. Soon after they married they decided to use Flyn’s paintings to create a life style brand. The concept we promote is called “Shared Environment”, highlighting the intersection of wildlife and humans sharing the same space. The sensitivity and humor in the work has had an amazing reception. Our customers become life-long fans of the brand. The paintings for which the products are based are unique in that they show an animal’s individual character, many times the animals look back at the viewer engaging them, their activities showing the cleverness and ingenuity of animals adapting to an ever changing environment.
We started in our garage and have now built a beautiful, colorful sew shop and gallery/retail space in Westbrook Maine. We love having our customers stop in and design their own patch/hat combo which is sewn for them on the spot. We are excited to announce our participation in a two month holiday market in Boston called Snowport.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Creativity, Hard work, and an undying belief in what we are doing. Surround yourself with positive people and seek out those with experience because no one is born with this knowledge.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
We have had several successful collaborations with other businesses such as with Boothbay Botanical Garden creating product for their biggest event of the year called Gardens Aglow. We have created cobranded products for a local women owned oyster farmer, Nauti Sisters, A hard seltzer company called Apres, a gourmet donut shop named Eighty8 Donut Cafe and the local branch of Fringe Festival. Collaborations are important both for our brand and the brand we are working with. We would love to do more collaborations with fun brands who appreciate our mission to highlight the wonderful animals who are our neighbors.
