Meet Focus…

We recently connected with Focus… and have shared our conversation below.

Focus…, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I am a father of 5 and a recent grandfather. My children fuel my resilience. Plus, my faith is very real for me. I never do anything fully alone…

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

My real name is Bernard Edwards Jr., son of the late Bernard Edwards (bassist and co-founder of the group CHIC). I have always wanted to be in the music industry and follow in my father’s footsteps. Even though he has been gone since ’96, I can honestly say that I still do everything to make him proud. I have worked with Dr. Dre and Aftermath Entertainment for over 20yrs and Dre is not only my mentor, he is my Big Bro.

I am super excited about my group READ THE PDF which consists of myself, Dem Jointz and Denaun Porter. I also work with some really talented artists that excite me creatively, as well. Big shout out to Cocoa Sarai and Daygo Fatts…

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

“Stay Humble.
Stay Hungry.
Stay Focused!”

I live by this!

Humility goes a long way when dealing with various egos and vast amounts of pride. The more people go “up”, I will counter their energy within reason so we can create what is needed.

Hunger fuels any individual to find their way(s) to get fed.

Being focused aids in a direction for your drive. It is imperative to work consistantly but with precision. Aimless work yields no fruit…

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

I am currently 52 yrs old and I am essentially starting a “new life”. I was married prior to covid (2020) and when my ex-wife left me, I had to figure out how to live for myself and my children. I am a servant at heart and I constantly wanted her validation. Not having it sent me into a tailspin of uncerntainty to say the least. My therapist, Dr. April Wozencroft, was introduced to me by my best friend. Dr. April has been helping me with tools that have truly change my way of thinking completely. I deeply believe in therapy…
