We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Foxy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Foxy below.
Foxy , first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
For me, overcoming imposter syndrome is a continued practice. With every new level I reach , the feeling is always there but I make myself take a step back and remember that “ I “ too , am there. Even if I feel inadequate I’m still ‘in the room’ and I have the opportunity to learn and grow from the people around me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Foxy and I’m a hairstylist/ freelance artist. I own a permanent salon suite but I also travel and have clients all over the country and abroad. I also I also enjoy working on set and doing fashion shows. Foxy is not my legal name but it has become my brand over the years.
I love what I do because I have been able to customize my career based off of the things I enjoy. I love the stability of everyday clients in the salon but I also love traveling and working on creative projects that bring me inspiration and challenge me to grow. When it comes to the technical side, my superpower is being able to work with all textures of hair.
I would say my greatest strength is being able to connect with my clients in a way that no matter their status they feel comfortable and safe. I named my business “ The Fox Den Hair Hangout” because I want clients to feel safe, confident, and like they are hanging out with a friend. Creating the right atmosphere in my space is just as important to me as the service I am providing.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
You’ll never succeed unless you’re okay with making mistakes. Of course there is an end goal to reach , but the most important part of the journey is the process and you have to learn to appreciate the process.
Be kind to everyone you meet because you never know who may be the connection to your next great opportunity. In this industry I have learned that the skill matters, but who you know holds just as much weight. All it takes is for someone to mention your name. You also have to be prepared when the opportunity comes. Customer service can also make or break your business. I treat all of my clients like they are the “celebrity” because during that time they have booked with me, they are. For some it could be then only time they have to take for themselves or it’s their safe space and it’s a privilege that they would want to spend it with me.
Most people will tell you to set realistic goals for yourself and that’s cute- but as for me I am driven by my faith. I truly believe that if I have the faith to believe I can achieve something, I will. I set goals that sound absolutely ridiculous (to some ) but it gives me something to work towards. I make vision boards and keep notes around my home that remind me of those goals and that encourage me. You gotta be your own hype man! Pretty soon that goal doesn’t seem so ridiculous and next thing you know it’s something you’ve checked off your list.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Creating boundaries is an absolute must. As a service provider, not only are you physically working but you are dealing with people and different energies. That can absolutely be exhausting without boundaries. “No” is not a bad word ; learn to use it.
I make sure to carve out time for myself to retreat and regroup. Go on a trip, take a hike, however you need to recharge and escape, make it priority and a non-negotiable part of your business.
