Meet Fractal World

We recently connected with Fractal World and have shared our conversation below.

Fractal , so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?

Being a fairly young band, we haven’t really had issues with burnout in the song writing or performing process. We’ve all experienced, however, the band helping us from becoming burnt out in our personal and professional lives. Having the band as a creative outlet has prevented us from feeling stuck in a day-to-day, week-to-week routine that lacks personal growth. Having this creative outlet has definitely helped us remedy our individual burnout experiences and has since prevented burnout in our professional lives.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

We’re a young band from Pittsburgh, PA who started about a year ago now. We started the band because in the college space, a lot of us missed performing live and wanted to explore our writing skills, with some of us being familiar with the writing process, while others were new to writing original music and wanted to explore the process. Our music is fairly experimental – we love to mix genres and put new twists on commonly used musical elements. We love mixing more technical musical patterns with the shared experiences we have through our lyrics. Our goal over the next few months is to release some of this music and get back to performing throughout the Pittsburgh area.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Practice is undeniably the most important quality of a band, which we have learned as we continue to develop how we practice, both individually and in a group setting. Another quality that’s become increasingly important is the skill and ability to network within the music field. We’ve been able to do a lot of cool things through friends that have referred us to shows, interviews, and more, and it’s become really important for us to communicate in the music space and feel comfortable doing so. Having an open mind to creativity and trusting the creative process has been a crucial learned quality, along with knowing when to draw inspiration from our idols. It can be uncomfortable to try something new with writing, performance, etc, but it’s important for our growth as a band, and it’s equally important to draw inspiration from the bands and performers we look up to.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

The biggest obstacle we’ve been facing recently is fairly fundamental to any band – we’ve had difficulty in securing a permanent drummer, which has left us unable to perform live for much longer than we would like. This has motivated us to shift our perspective and develop ways to be productive as a band, which recently has meant dedicating time to recording and writing, which will lead to our first official release. While we would love to have a drummer and be performing live like we originally intended, this inconvenience will ultimately allow us to grow and develop as a band and allow us to focus on writing and recording, which greatly benefits us.
