Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Francesca Eales. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Francesca, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I don’t think overcoming is really the answer to impostor syndrome. I know as a society we are perpetually trying to “fix” ourselves but I really think sometimes we just need to lean into it. I might not ever feel like I have it all together or feel like I know what I’m doing. And honestly that’s OK. We are all doing our best and sometimes I mess up. And that’s OK too. I think it would be worse to “fake it till I make it” and lose some of the authenticity that makes my experience unique. And in those experiences I can share, laugh and meet new people and honestly that’s some of the best parts. I’m not up here pretending to be something I’m not. And maybe I have imposter syndrome and some crazy anxiety but being honest about it helps me move forward regardless if I think everything is perfect or not.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I make plastic free lip balm. Specifically lip balm and lip care products that focus on sustainability and providing plastic free alternatives to your standard lip products. Plastic lip balm containers are big culprits in land fills. They almost never get recycled and always end up in the trash. Furthermore those tiny plastic containers can take hundreds of years to decompose leaving waste on our planet. Hello Wink is committed to providing a plastic free alternative to lip balm with our products. I create and make a line of deeply pigmented tinted lip balm products and regular (colorless) lip balm and glosses and lip scrubs. All with sticking to our value system of providing plastic free packaging.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities would have to be not giving even when it seems impossible, having good time management and trusting your gut. The intuitive side of the business is super important. You may meet someone or have an opportunity come up but if you feel something is off trust your intuition and go with what you feel. Even if it’s not what everyone says you should be doing. Time management because you will need to optimize every minute of your day. Especially if you have other commitments like a day job or family. And not giving up because it’ll get to a point where things will get hard and it’s important for you to keep going.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The book that has had the most impact on my life and starting the whole process of getting me to trust myself and live my truth has been Tina Liffords The Little Book of Big Lies. I caught her randomly one day a few years ago on a radio show and what she said how a profound effect on how I view myself. I immediately bought her audio book and listened to it twice in a row just to absorb everything she was saying. She writes about how we tell ourself lies and believe those lies and how they prevent us from doing what we want and living our truths. Her book honestly changed the trajectory of my life and I started to decondition myself from everything I had believed. And that lead me down a completely different path of wanting to really do something else with my life.
