Meet Francisco Ratti

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Francisco Ratti. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Francisco , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

It all started when I was a kid, and I wanted to paint. I remember I loved coloring the figures in school, it was my favorite activity. In elementary school, every time a new season started, we’d make a colored cover page, and it was my favorite moment of the year. And when my classmates started seeing how I drew, we started having drawing competitions.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I have a work routine of going to paint in my studio every day and I also teach art classes. I’m always producing work for some exhibition, and right now I’m working on a collaboration with a clothing brand that hasn’t been released yet.

About my paintings:

My paintings are all done by hand, mostly first drawn with my finger on the phone screen and then copied in a larger format onto the canvas manually. In a world marked by digital technologies, I consider painting a human gesture. In them, I address the different possibilities of constructing an image and the role that the incorporation of technology plays in that. The use of digital resources through painting brings up the idea of forms of representation, and the procedure values the recovery of the gesture. Painting has no other objective than to be made, in an intention that form and doing advance over thought, and a question underlies: how do we look at a painting and how do we look at a screen?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Discipline, the desire for innovation, and perseverance.
To develop a skill to its fullest, you have to be doing something genuine that motivates you. And you have to dedicate a lot to it, despite moments of crisis. Don’t stop thinking about the goal and keep working.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

A bigger messaje, conversations with David Hockney and Martin Gayford.
I find his vision on the history of painting in general to be very important, and he’s my great reference. After a long process, he arrives at an image with all his great knowledge behind it, and at the same time, an unforced simplicity. Every time I see one of his works, or him, I get emotional. With this book, I discovered that I get emotional not only from seeing him, but also from reading him. When I’m in a crisis, I open this book.
