Meet Frank Czajka

We recently connected with Frank Czajka and have shared our conversation below.

Frank , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

Your creativity is a powerful force that can ignite the creative spark in others. It’s not something that can be taught, but it can certainly inspire someone else’s inner creative need or desire to flex their dormant creative urges. Everything is a blank canvas, and with your mind’s eye, you can see the infinite possibilities. Start small and build from there, exploring what can be. I speak to several people about the ideas they have, and the next thing is that only if I had $100,000, I could do it. It’s unclear how that number came about, but you’ve just given yourself 100,000 reasons not to move forward. So, for me, look everywhere and absorb everything. There are infinite creative opportunities out there. You never know where the next one is coming from or who will join you on your journey.

The “Nefarious Effect” is among the most innovative and creative guitar finishes introduced in the last decade. This proprietary, patent-pending finish transforms the appearance of your guitar. The “Nefarious Effect” occurs when a large amount of electricity is discharged, causing the insulating material to react. As this reaction occurs, branching fern-like conductive channels form rapidly, allowing the trapped charge to release in a large spark. The powerful electric charge creates hundreds of intricate and unique branching fractals during this discharge process. This process does not affect the resonances or tonality of the instrument.

Nefarious Guitars guarantees that the “Nefarious Effect” produced by this unique process results in a finish that is truly one-of-a-kind and will not be replicated—this is our ironclad promise. Being the first to market is essential, and we acknowledge that this process can be extremely dangerous. Embrace your individuality!

The Nefarious Effect: Creating revolutionary, eye popping new designs on wooden instruments, Nefarious co-founders Marko Babineau and Frank Czajka’s artistic vision, innovation and creative design are rooted in what they call “The Nefarious Effect.” But it’s not just a clever branding idea – it’s reflective of the science that goes into the artistry. According to them, when a large amount of electricity is discharged, the insulator material starts to react. As this reaction occurs, branching fern-like conductive channels form extremely quickly, allowing the trapped charge to torch out in a large spark. During the discharge process, the powerful electric charge leaves (up to) 100% of branching fractals. The stunning result of these intricate details was on display at this year’s NAMM show, where they attracted much attention for their first two prototypes, built by Rex Rose and named for Czajka’s late parents, in a booth they shared with Megadeth’s bassist David Ellefson. Subsequent models are being built by Gio Loria in collaboration with Black Volt Amplification. They are also working on designs with a henna artist.

Quote from Marko Babineau: “For the last 20 years,” Babineau says, “we’ve seen nothing but retro relic guitars with paint taken off the edges with a chain and sander to create an antique look. That’s all good, but ours have a whole different look from actually burning into the face of the guitar. Every guitar we burn has a different patent but goes in the flow of the wood grain.

Origin Story: Long before Nefarious, both principals enjoyed lengthy careers in the music industry. Babineau worked for 25 years in marketing, promotion and artist development for Clive Davis, A&M Records and Geffen, directly impacting the careers of Aerosmith, Guns N’ Roses, Neil Young, Nirvana and Elton John. Czajka launched his career working with A&M Music Publishing (Almo Irving) before working in A&R for Impact Records and then as a talent manager for Left Bank Management. Later working successfully in real estate, Babineau took a client to a home for sale in Sherman Oaks and immediately saw in the hallway a raw wood guitar body. He met the seller, Czajka, who did the burn on the instrument as part of his hobby and side business of taking reclaimed wood and creating unique burn designs on tables, chairs, wine racks and other items. Babineau, also a veteran drummer with various bands, immediately saw the possibilities of a partnership. Two months later, Nefarious was born.

Guitar Center Foundation Auction: Nefarious has contributed their exclusive NEFARIOUS Patch Guitar – featuring a denim design and “patches” of famous band logos – for a charity auction which benefits The Guitar Center Foundation, whose grants and other efforts aid veterans, hospital patients, the unhouse, those affected by natural disasters and youth in both schools and after school programs. Nefarious’ mission statement says it all: “The commitment is to dream, envision and execute everything the team can do. The reward is to see the hallucination come to fruition in our work.” The Patch Guitar was produced by Flynn (foodogluthiery.com)

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

dream envision execute

You can’t build a reputation on what you are going to do.

Vision without execution is just a hallucination.

If you always do what you have always done, you get what you always got.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

The success of any business hinges on the diversity of its backgrounds. The infusion of new experiences and visionary ideas is a crucial catalyst for innovation and exploration.

For me to discover that Leo Fender was neither a guitar luthier nor a musician was mind-blowing and a great incentive.
He was an engineer and, to this day, one of the premier guitar makers, along with Gibson’s Les Paul.

Nefarious Guitars is the next phase in guitar design and evolution.

As William Faulkner wisely said, ‘You cannot swim to new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore.’
Words to live by.

The creative spirit is an energy that can not be harnessed or ignored. If you choose to ignore it, you do so at your peril. The potential risks of stifling creativity are too significant to overlook.
