We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Freddie Villa. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Freddie below.
Freddie , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I gained my work ethic through observing my parents early on. Both my mother and my father were hard workers waking up at 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. every single day. To have work, was a blessing and that mindset was instilled to me as far back as I can remember. Over time I developed my own drive. Now, as I’ve become an adult it’s just second nature to work and create. I’m happiest when I am doing something to help me progress in life.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a pinstriper located out of the Tampa Bay area, Florida. I mostly create pinstripe art, and occasionally I do pinstriping on vehicles. I have cultivated a YouTube page where I share my passion for the art of pinstriping, and share knowledge through various types of how-to videos. What I find special about pinstriping is the purity of the art form. It doesn’t have to represent anything yet. Although somewhat freeform, it has to follow certain guidelines to become understood as pinstriping art. I go under the name “Villa Pinstriping” on all social media platforms IE Instagram, YouTube and Facebook. I think what sets me apart from most other Pinstripers is that they mainly focus on working on other people’s vehicles in order to show their artwork, whereas I prefer to create art that people from around the world can own physically. The creation of this art form is meditative for me and has been extremely rewarding in multiple aspects of my life. I’m most excited to see what the future holds with the Pinstriping art form as it is still considered lowbrow and underground. The growth that it’s seen in recent years has been explosive, and yet still the general public does not know about it. I did not grow up in the car culture as most did, nor did I grow up around pinstriping or sign. Painting. My work now is recognized throughout the entire pinstriping community, for good or bad, and I’ve carved out my own path within the craft.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that help me in my journey most were patience, Open-Mindedness and most importantly consistency. Pinstriping requires immense patience as it takes years to become even semi mediocre at it. Open-mindedness comes with the territory as you will get much information from many different avenues Sending you in various directions. You must have an open mind to choose what works best for you. Consistency comes into play because the art of pinstriping is almost 100% muscle memory. Taking anytime off will eventually lower your abilities. If you’re just starting out do everything you can to streamline the process, and make it enjoyable. In my own creative space I like to have all my tools at arms length ready to be used at a moment’s notice, I have music and good lighting to make sure The process is fun which allows me to get into a creative zone.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Fortunately, for me, the entire pinstriping community online has been incredibly helpful. The list is too long to mention. Anytime I’m in a rut or I have a question on a technical level. I have an endless array of seasoned Pinstripers that are more than willing to help. Since this art form is still underground and has not gone mainstream, the greatest pinstripers in the world are available to speak to. It’s an amazing resource that frankly isn’t afforded to most crafts or profession. Imagine a young sports player having one-on-one access to the greatest in the world, not very common. But in pinstriping the community is vast and eager to help.
