We were lucky to catch up with Frederick Jabber recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Frederick, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
The luxury retail and clothing business is very competitive, and often the major suppliers don’t look like me. When I’m sitting across the table from the representatives of these luxury brands working on my collection for each season, often I am the only minority in the showrooms.
Prior to these meetings, I have found reflecting on the historical figures that came before me made these moments possible. My job is now only to represent myself, my brand, community and family in a positive light.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the owner of J. Fredric, a boutique located in Charleston Place Shops. We offer ready to wear or Made-To-Measure clothing, sportswear, shoes and accessories.
We have been able to carve a niche business based in Charleston, SC where we offer a curated collection of modern classic styles for men and custom Womens offerings. The ready to wear and hand tailored Made-To-Measure collections are offered throughout the United States.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I do my best too always be knowledgeable about the products we offer. The quality of the make, the fabrics, fit and region that offers the product. Knowing this information, gives confidence to clients that you are an artisan.
I have worked with some of the most gifted tailors in the business, the skills they have taught me I use each day to make sure the fit is correct.
This knowledge is what helps insure that our products fit, wear and perform to their expectations.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
We are looking to collaborate with wedding planners and stylist. These are two areas we feel will improve our visibility and expand our reach in the southeastern region.
The wedding business has exploded in this region due to our beautiful costal location, architecture and award winning chefs.
