We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Fresco Alessandro a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Fresco, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
In my photographic journey, I’ve discovered there is a viewer for just about anyone. There are niche photographers and then there are less niche photographers. What is came down to was being my true and authentic self. I enjoy taking photos of people; I’ve never been so interested in landscapes. I love the unpredictability of people. As a photographer you meet all types and you learn so much from them. Portraits, fashion, events; each category offers a unique and exciting look into the human spirit. So when we talk about confidence and self-esteem, I say that engaging with your subject; sharing stories and including them in the photographic process is the best way to build your self esteem and confidence.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My company is called Fresco Arts Team. I built it on the premise that every person, whether they are on my team, a client or in any way involved in a shoot is part of our team. We work together to capture images and make memories come to life. I am the owner and lead photographer and have a great network of professionals that I invite to work on projects with me.
The most exciting part about what I do is the exploration aspect. From location, to styling, and conceptualizing, we are constantly inventing and creating things that simply weren’t there before. It’s an alchemical process that begins in the minds and we bring it to life.
With Fresco Arts Team, we’ve worked with fashion designers, theaters, production companies and even a circus!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Quality number 1 is “Gusto”. With anything you do, I believe you simply have to go for it, Don’t worry about whether it’s perfect. You don’t have to show your first few pieces of work (or any of it really). As long as you create with wonder and intention, that’s enough to get started.
Quality number 2 is “Desire to learn”. No one gets very far if they don’t learn new skills and increase their knowledge of past skills. Things are always evolving and it’s so important to keep up with new techniques and processes. You don’t have to adopt them, but simply reading about or attempting them may inspire a new idea. A great example of this in photography is “Dragging the shutter” This is a technique where you set your camera to a darker ambient light and then illuminate the subject briefly with a flash once or even multiple times. This effect has been used and evolved considerably over the years and it all started with a misuse of the flash.
Quality number 3 is “Reset” Okay, so you got to a certain point. Maybe you accomplished your goals. Great job! But now things feels a little redundant. You got comfortable and you may even start to lose interest in your craft. Take this opportunity to stop. Make an intentional mistake. Try doing something you never tried before, or even nonsensically. Resetting is a great technique because it causes your brain to create new connections between synapses. In essence, we develop blind spots when we become proficient in a technique and this makes us believe that our way is the only or perhaps best way to do something. This simply isn’t true. There are so many ways to do so many things. Without resetting, we are robbing ourselves of some pretty great experiences and “Ah hah” moments.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I mentioned before that the “Team” in “Fresco Arts Team” includes folks who I collaborate and create with, whether they are a part of my company or not. “Team” is my way of inviting folks who want to create something new or synthesize their talents with ours. This list includes but is not limited to; stylists, hair and makeups artist, craft and builders, models, designers, cosplayers, and the list go on. Don’t be shy, we’re open to your ideas.
On our end there is a special project that I began to conceptualize that will be a massive undertaking. It will require a rather sizable team of folks, so whether you’re a pro or just starting out, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]. We can’t wait to hear from you.
