We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Fryenation. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Fryenation below.
Fryenation, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
First and foremost, I would like to dedicate finding my purpose to my mother, Robbin Rena Frye. Sadly, she just passed January 7th, 2024. My mom was and will forever be the driving force behind every action I make. As a child I would be fascinated with my mother and sister’s singing resonating throughout the house. They would sing so much that even from a young age I found great inspiration to find my own voice. Growing up I was a lot more reserved than most. So when I noticed my ability to express myself through music & poetry, I immediately took it upon myself to utilize that gift as a tool to reach out to those who felt as confined as I did.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a Hip-hop/R&B artist from Washington DC, and I’ve been making music as a living for the last 10+ years. Starting in my freshman year of high school at McKinley Tech, I involved myself within various musical ventures by the time of graduation in 2014. Making a name for myself within the music scene so early on by performing at nearly every venue within the District, I found a lot of fulfillment in my success and ability to stand out amongst the crowd. I’ve performed for a number of A-list acts such as Snoop Dogg, Travis Scott, Hopsin, Erykah Badu, and more.
Since then I’ve made an effort to develop my musical sound & talent by recording, mixing, mastering, producing, and distributing my own material. It was, and still is, an exciting experience that teaches me new tactics, lessons, and approach to the industry on a daily basis. I think one of the most special aspects of being an artist is being able to not only have the freedom to express yourself in multiple ways people typically would never think of, but also get to witness the growth within yourself throughout every new piece of material.
Once the material reached a certain point, I then took it a step further by creating content based on the music for social media. Deep diving into the life of a content creator felt like it was second nature as I’d always had a strong interest and background in photography, film, and production. This only made it even easier for me to begin my own merchandise that I sell exclusively online through Fourthwall.com as well as my official artist website (https://fryenation.com).
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
When I think back, I would say the number one quality someone needs to have in order to be a successful creator/artist of any kind is consistency. I know so many talented artists & creatives who never truly reach their full potential because they aren’t consistent. There’s going to be days you don’t feel like recording, writing, or even setting aside time to create quality content for your audience. However, you have to be very disciplined during the times of little-to-no motivation. When you lack motivation, you need to make up for it in action.
The second most important trait for success would be self-belief. If you aren’t confident in yourself, then it’s going to be hard for anyone to take you seriously. It takes real heart, dedication, and persistence in order to find yourself and stand out amongst the sea of people trying to take your place. That brings me into my last most important quality which is to simply be yourself.
It seems obvious, but there are so many artist who begin their journey trying to portray this character of what they expect people would like to see. That in itself will completely put an end to someone’s efforts before they can even start unfortunately. If you are spending majority or your time trying to be your favorite artist or replicate what’s “popular,” then you’ll never allow yourself the chance to create something new for the world or find your true voice.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The number one challenge I’m facing right now, again, is the recent loss of my mother, Robbin Rena Frye. Unfortunately, I lost my best friend, main support, number one fan, and more on January 7th, 2024. It has literally only been a week since her passing and I cannot begin to express the vast hole I feel in my life. My chest hurts even having to write this because she was the reason for my entire being. I feel robbed of an angel and so many years with my greatest gift. I wanted to give her the world. Little did I know, I had it in front of me the entire time. Her voice singing throughout the house as a child with forever resonate within my soul. However, I truly fear my heart will never sing the same…
I would’ve never guessed in a million years that at 27 years of age I would be burying literally every dream and vision for the future I ever had this upcoming Friday, January 19th, 2024. To make it worse, it hasn’t even been a year since I lost my father Stephen Antione Fowler on January, 17th, 2o23. Ten days apart, I lost the two people who always had my back through it all. There’s absolutely no words for the pain that my family has endured over the years, and quite honestly, there’s not much I can do about it except pray and wipe the tears as they come.
I want nothing more than to continue to make my mom & dad proud through my actions as an individual as well as an artist. Every piece of material I make will forever shine light on the love and influence they had on my life. They say “wounds heal with time,” but right now, time is sitting scarily still.
