We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gabriel Bautista a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabriel, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
It took one of the lowest point of my life for me to discover my purpose in life. It happened a couple months after graduating high school in 2016 & shortly after the passing my brother where I fell into a deep state of depression. My family household was unstable & there were a lot moving parts happening that were out of my control. I felt that a lot of bad things were happening without reason. However, through a moment of darkness there is always some light that seems to shine through.
I was creating music at my university in the piano room & realised that all the light I was searching for was within me. My purpose in life was to be able to bring out as much of what was inside of me towards the world to make it less dark for others. Sometimes were always searching for a miracle & we forget how to be a miracle for others. God placed us all on this for a reason & nothing in life should ever be one-sided. It’s better to give then to receive & over time you will eventually find the fruit of that saying take a form of it’s own.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a first generation Mexican-American actor, film composer, and recording artist who began his career as a music performer for local churches at the age of 5. For a decade, I performed for theme parks and private events as a guitarist, singer, and artist. I then decided to focus on acting, and landed my first lead role in the featured short “Tacos = Love” (2021). Since then, I have been a part of projects in partnership with Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Films. I’ve have had the honour & privilege to be seen by millions around the world.
Now, I’m at the point in my career where I am starting get recognise by people here & there. It genuinely does take while to see results. At first we all deal with obstacles in the pursuit of anything. However, the sooner one realises how short life can be, then you realise the only thing that matters most is what one decides to leave behind before we all meet our creator.
With my gifts and abilities, I seek to connect people all around the world to realize the beauty within humanity. Currently, I can be seen in the feature film “This is Water” (2024) as one of the lead roles, as well as a variety of other projects coming soon.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Persistence, Discipline, & Courage. It took me these three quality traits to get this far not only in my career, but also in my life. If I was not persistent in pushing towards my dream of being an entertainer & gave up as soon as I hit a low I would have just led a mediocre existence. I genuinely believe success is not measured in ones ability to win every obstacle that life throws at you, but rather in ones ability to endure hardship & loss while in the pursuit of ones purpose.
It take discipline to be persistent because there are days where I did not want to get out of my bed to do anything, but whenever I chose to pursue something I did not feel like doing I ended up being something really good for my career. For instance, I was a offered an in-person audition to play either the lead or a supporting role in this short film that was set to be funded by the State of California. I did not want to go because I felt genuinely comfortable being in my own bed that day. However, it took discipline to go to the place & get out of bed because the dream that i have is a dream I chose to have. Therefore, if I chose my dream then I should not complain about the responsibilities that my dream entails. I went in & got the lead role & that is possibly one of the best examples of discipline I can say.
Finally, it takes courage to pursue a dream that at first no one else can see. Especially if you are the only one in your family who decided to embark on a journey that is out of the families blueprint. I vividly remember telling my high school peers about my dream of being an entertainer & they laughed & did not believe in me. But, fast forward to the present day, they highly respect what I do & no longer can say I was crazy to pursue what I chose to do. It takes courage to follow your heart.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The bible, because there certain stories that I identified with while growing up that inspired me to push forward in my endeavours. For instance, the story of Joseph is so inspiring because despite being betrayed by his brothers to be sold into slavery he kept his integrity & character. People always gravitated to him & eventually the Pharaoh of Egypt appointed him to be his right hand man.
For me, it taught me that despite how circumstances me look like at the present moment. Overtime, if one keeps at it and stays true to their principles one will have a peace in their life than those who compromise their integrity for the sake of ego.
