Meet Gabriel Sweet

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gabriel Sweet. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gabriel below.

Gabriel, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity alive through a combination of test shoots and collaborative ventures with new creatives. In my most recent collaboration, I orchestrated a dynamic team for the shoot, bringing together unique talents and expertise.

One key member of the team is Felix, a seasoned mixologist with a culinary background who is currently excelling at Damian DTLA. Working alongside Felix is Carolina, a prop stylist with whom I’ve enjoyed a productive collaborative history. As for myself, I am a photographer and creative professional with deep roots in the fashion industry. However, my current focus lies in the captivating realm of food and beverage photography.

During our collaboration, I took on the role of curating the team and conceptualizing the shoot’s creative direction. Carolina’s impeccable prop styling skillfully unified the visuals, enhancing the overall aesthetics of the project. Felix’s mixology prowess was particularly impressive, as he meticulously crafted stunning cocktails with an unwavering attention to detail, even in the selection and arrangement of garnishes. His insightful narratives behind each libation added a compelling and enriching layer to the entire experience.

I believe that engaging in test shoots is an excellent way to continuously challenge myself and explore new avenues. Test shoots allow me to experiment with different technical aspects of the shoot and venture into photographing new subjects. Embracing these challenges not only keeps my creativity fresh but also contributes to my growth as a photographer. Each hurdle faced during a test shoot becomes an opportunity to learn and refine my skills, resulting in a more versatile and adaptable creative approach.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My journey in the world of creativity began in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and took me through the exciting worlds of fashion and food photography. At 18, I landed in Miami, focused on developing my artistic talents and nurturing my creativity. I honed my skills at Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, refining my craft and discovering my artistic instincts.

While I initially set out to explore fashion photography, my travels across Southeast Asia and Europe added layers of cultural experiences to my artistic story. These moments deepened my understanding, eventually leading me to make New York City my creative hub.

In NYC, I dove into visual storytelling, capturing runway shows, chatting with industry pros, and photographing various fashion brands, including well-known names like Rodarte, Clare V, Jenni Kayne, Jennifer Meyer, and EF Collection. This phase of my journey expanded my horizons and honed my ability to create captivating visual stories.

Today, in Los Angeles, I’m driven by my artistic passion. I focus my lens on high-end fashion brands, esteemed jewelry clients, and visionary beauty brands. This evolution equips me with a unique viewpoint, allowing me to infuse my distinct perspective into every project.

Though I have deep roots in fashion photography, a growing love for food’s beauty has led me to a new adventure in food and beverage photography. This transition blends my artistic touch with culinary exploration. Collaborating with clients, I’m dedicated to infusing my artistic vision into captivating campaigns and transformative rebranding. Through these collaborations, I aim to showcase the allure of food, sparking imagination and fostering connections.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, three qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge stand out as particularly impactful. Firstly, the ability to embrace and immerse myself in different cultures has been a cornerstone of my creative evolution. My travels through Southeast Asia, Europe, and beyond exposed me to diverse perspectives and ways of life. This cultural curiosity not only enriched my artistic style but also allowed me to create more authentic and resonant narratives through my photography. For those at the beginning of their journey, my advice is to cultivate curiosity, step out of your comfort zones, and be open to learning from the people and places you encounter. Embracing new experiences can become invaluable sources of inspiration.

Secondly, trusting my skillset and embracing new challenges played a pivotal role in my growth. Taking on bigger projects, even when they seemed intimidating, allowed me to expand my capabilities and perform under pressure. To those in the early stages of their journey, I recommend believing in your abilities and not shying away from opportunities that push your boundaries. You’ll be surprised by how much you can achieve when you trust yourself and rise to the occasion.

Lastly, as someone who continues to work in fashion photography while also exploring the captivating world of food photography, I’ve learned the importance of balancing multiple passions. Integrating different creative outlets into your journey can be incredibly rewarding. If you’re early in your journey, my advice is to embrace the different facets of your creativity and seek harmony between them. This balance can lead to a more holistic and fulfilling artistic expression.

To those embarking on their own journeys, I encourage you to foster curiosity, believe in your abilities, and find ways to harmonize your various creative pursuits. The creative world is vast and ever-evolving, and by honing these qualities, you can navigate its twists and turns with confidence and innovation.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely, I’m always excited to connect and collaborate with individuals who share a passion for creative exploration. For me, the best collaborations are those where clients are open to new ideas, allowing our work together to truly feel like a joint endeavor. When working with clients, I offer not only my photography expertise but also art direction services to ensure that the project aligns with the brand’s voice and objectives. Finding that sweet spot where creativity and purpose converge is what I strive for.

In addition to client work, I’m enthusiastic about collaborating with a diverse range of creative professionals. Whether it’s art and creative directors, wardrobe stylists, prop stylists, set designers, models, location scouts, or hair and makeup artists, I believe that collaborations thrive when there’s a shared interest and a common vision. This extends to personal projects and test shoots, where I aim to create meaningful and impactful work that resonates with everyone involved.

To connect with me and explore potential collaborations, the best way is to reach out via email or connect with me on Instagram (@gabriel__sweet). I’m looking forward to connecting with fellow creatives who are ready to join forces in crafting compelling visual narratives that inspire and captivate.
