We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gabriel Turner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Gabriel , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I personally feel that day to day life “duties” can cause anyones creativity to die. Honestly, I keep pushing through. For example, as a musician/songwriter I find an area (wherever I’m located at that moment) and attempt to write down my thoughts. By writing down my thoughts, it causes me to express myself and opens up most road blocks
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Gabriel Turner. I’m a singer songwriter based out of Houston Texas. I enjoy creating music that causes individuals to reflect on past, present and future experiences. I plan on releasing several single records this year that will be available on on music platforms.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Devotion, strength & musical skill.
Devotion at wanting to be at my best in music allowed me to develop a skill over time that is only acquired with repetition. Strength allowed me to keep pressing forward even when no one wanted to listen or cared to lend an ear to my music. Lastly, musical skill ties into devotion that helped and continues to help me create from my heart.
My advice to those early on in their journey, is to keep your head in the game by staying focused and try not to let those around you be a distraction to your dream.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of improvement would be selfishness. Im learning that one needs to take care of themselves in-order to be a help to others. I often neglected my needs and wants just to benefit or make everyone happy. To be clear, I’m not saying to only focus on yourself 100% of the time but, it helps to allow yourself to be fed sometimes.
