We recently connected with Gabrielle Reed and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabrielle, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Like most people, I have moments where I question myself and get super doubtful. I start wondering if I can do something or if I’m good enough and that snowballs into making assumptions about what will or won’t happen next thing I know I’ve gone down a rabbit whole of what ifs.
The thing that helps me overcome those moments is completely focusing on where my feet are planted. I focus solely on what’s happening and where I am at that exact moment. I take a few breaths and tap my feet on the ground and remind myself of the exact facts of the moment I’m in. I speak positively to myself about where I am and why I’m there while constantly reminding myself that “I got this!”
I wouldn’t say I’ve completely overcame imposter syndrome but I’m proud of how I handle moments of self doubt.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Gabrielle Reed and I am the owner of Detroit Berry Company. We make chocolate covered treats specializing in chocolate covered strawberries. These aren’t regular-degular chocolate covered berries, we hand craft edible master pieces from teacups to Mickey Mouse; we can make any theme come to life with our berries. Detroit Berry Co. has some of the most unique flavors including Strawberry Crunch, Strawberry Lemonade, and our award winning Banana Pudding berries.
We just started making chocolate covered Oreos and these have quickly become one of my favorite products. We’re able to add photos, logos, and a variety of edible images to the Oreos making them super customizable and I love custom orders. If customers want something they don’t see on the site like a theme, vegan/sugar free chocolate, or a specialized favor we’re happy to create it for any single, catering, or corporate orders.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’m still pretty early in my entrepreneurial career so I’m definitely still learning. As an entrepreneur the most important skillset is learning to be resilient. Things won’t always go as planned and plan B might not always work but learning to bounce back during setbacks and times of difficulty are truly important. Don’t let the bumps along the way discourage you!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m looking to collaborate with other Michigan business, particularly flower shops, tea houses and wineries. In addition to having a similar customer base, chocolate covered strawberries would pair perfectly with flowers, teas, and wines. I’m also interested in collaborating with local companies for any corporate gifting needs.
