Meet Gail Corso

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gail Corso. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gail below.

Hi Gail, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I believe my work ethic has come from many sources but the major influencer has to be my father. He was a very driven man. My father was an engineer and was very technical but also creative. He was what you would call an “A” type personality. Driven to get a job done and a bit of a perfectionist.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I have always loved producing art. I started out my career working in the art department of an embroidery company. I eventually quit that so that I could be home to raise my children. Once I had a bit of free time to get back into art, I began to paint portraits. Soon after that, the economy took a plunge so I needed to adapt and produced art that was more affordable. I began experimenting and started to paint glassware. I also had to find a niche so being from Louisville, Kentucky, horse racing, the Kentucky Derby and the bourbon industry became my focus. A lot of my glassware has a Kentucky theme. I also paint bourbon barrel, heads and staves as well as bourbon bottles. I am able to incorporate my love for portraits back into my art by offering caricature glassware. I also offer pet portraits on glass ornaments. Each item is hand painted by me. Many items are unique and personalized.

I have participated in a few nonprofit organizations, such as Bourbon With Heart, which incorporates art and the bourbon industry by hosting events to showcase artists and give back to the community. This has been a great way to expand my audience and get my work out there while also serving a better purpose.

I believe the keys to success are to do what you love, have the ability to adapt, find your niche and give back to the community.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I believe the three qualities that have helped me out has been adaptability, finding my niche, and giving back to the community. Be flexible and understand when you have to pivot. It’s wonderful to be able to do what you love, but if it doesn’t appeal to others, it’s just a hobby.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

The biggest obstacle I have faced is technology. I know in today’s world you have to be savvy with social media, websites, etc. in order to get your work seen to help build customers. That is something I have worked on and often struggled with. I am lucky enough to have a wonderful daughter who set up a website for me. Despite being in business for many years, I have only just launched my website this year.
