Meet Garfield Redden

We recently connected with Garfield Redden and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Garfield, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

My generosity comes from others helping me along the way, guiding me through challenges, and teaching me things that have allowed me to perform better. I truly believe in the principle that what comes around goes around, so I strive to give back in the same way I’ve been supported.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m the drummer for One Day Alive, a band based in Cincinnati, Ohio. We’re an Alternative Rock band known for our heavy guitar-driven sound and powerful, melodic drums, balanced by smooth, ear-soothing vocal melodies.

What excites me most about what we do is the energy we bring to our music and the connection it creates with our fans. It’s all about delivering a sound that moves people, both emotionally and physically, whether they’re blasting our tracks in their car or rocking out with us live.

As for what’s new, we’re always pushing boundaries and working on new music, so stay tuned for upcoming releases and shows! We’re also exploring ways to connect with our audience on a deeper level, whether through new merch, events, or social engagement. One Day Alive is about creating an experience, and we’re excited to share that journey with you.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, the three most impactful qualities and skills in my journey were passion, perseverance, and mentorship.

Passion: My love for music started at a young age, inspired by watching my father perform. That spark drove me to start playing in local bars at just 13, soaking in the energy and lessons from great local musicians. It’s that passion that kept me going through all the highs and lows.

Perseverance: Getting to where I am today required thousands of hours of practice, working tirelessly to hone my skills. It took courage to step in front of a crowd for the first time, and even more to earn my father’s approval—a moment that meant everything to me.

Mentorship: Having my father as a role model was invaluable. Watching him perform and learning from his journey helped shape my own. It’s not just about technical skill but also understanding the dedication and heart it takes to truly connect with people through music.

Advice for others early in their journey:

Follow your passion and let it guide you, even when the road is challenging.
Practice relentlessly—the more time you invest in your craft, the more confidence you’ll build.
Seek mentorship from those who inspire you. Whether it’s a parent, teacher, or local artist, learning from their experience can give you insights and encouragement that are hard to find alone.
Above all, stay patient and trust the process. Great things take time, but the journey is worth it.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

The person who has been most helpful in overcoming challenges and building the skills and knowledge I needed for success is undoubtedly my father. Watching him perform with Teazer in the 80s was like a masterclass in passion, artistry, and perseverance. Seeing him command the stage with his band, embracing the highs and lows of being a musician during the big hair band era, left an indelible mark on me.

Beyond just watching, it was his approach to guiding me through this journey that truly set me up for success. He didn’t just teach me how to play an instrument or navigate a performance; he showed me what it meant to dedicate yourself fully to your craft. He instilled in me the importance of hard work, resilience, and the willingness to face rejection and keep pushing forward.

His knowledge, built from years of performing, recording, and living the life of a professional musician, became my foundation. He taught me how to connect with an audience, the value of teamwork in a band, and the discipline required to keep growing as an artist. Most importantly, he showed me that music is about more than just sound—it’s about creating an emotional connection with others and staying true to your passion.

His mentorship and belief in my potential gave me the confidence to take risks and grow, knowing that I had someone in my corner who had walked the same path. I owe so much of who I am as a musician and person to the lessons I learned from my father and his journey with Teazer.
