We recently connected with Garnett Strother and have shared our conversation below.
Garnett, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Personally I believe effectiveness stems from one’s ability to remaining open to discovering diverse paths that lead to your desired outcome.
I’m usually the only person in the room that looks like me so I’ve gotten used to sticking out. It can be bothersome at times when we forget how much our energy contributes to our psycho social ecosystem. Sometimes, being singled out is a super power. It’s an opportunity to show people that you can be free just being who you are.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
The most exciting thing I’m working on is my personal development practice called Kagami Ryu. The way of the mirror blends Neural linguistic programming with martial arts techniques that assist us on our individual paths of personal development.
No matter where you are or what you’re going through, you can find your way toward a life of fulfillment.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Clarity. Identify what it is you are moving toward or away from. Even your limitations.. You must know your limits if you wish to improve them.
2. Compassion. All of my heroes have tried and failed numerous times before they set forth and conquered their fears. Being compassionate to yourself along your journey will help you to become compassionate to others and reduce the likelihood you will even notice the little defeats along the way.
3. Follow through.
Always see through things to the end.
It always takes longer to accomplish large under takings than they originally expected. Don’t make a decision on how much effort something “should” take before you do your research. Know the cost of completion and pay your debts in full and on time.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I have 3!
The Tao of jeet kune do by Bruce Lee.
The auto biography of Malcolm X
The book of 5 rings by myamoto musashi.
