Hi Garrett , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

As you can see, I dont really look like most people, not that I have anything against anyone’s style or anything. I just have my own thing going on. What I can tell you is this, what I do only works if I own it, and owning what I do, came with time. Being patient, consistent and confident, are the reasons I have any level of success. I have noticed that a little kindness, mixed with those three things has helped loosen up any tight situations I have found myself stuck in.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

When I was a child, I remember watching grown men on T.V. playing guitar for a living and thinking to myself “How cool would that be?” Well here we are, I am currently 33, about to be 34 and that’s exactly what I am doing. I have to admit, I’m doing things alot differently than The Dire Straits were, yet I’m doing it. The way this goes, almost 2 years ago, I was dying in a hospital bed from drinking too much. After that stint, I got sober and started creating my own music. That led to recording and producing my own music, which was pretty sketchy at first. With patience and persistence, I’ve managed to make music that is a little bit country, a little rock n roll and all me. I’m now proud to say, I am distributing my music through AWAL, a division of SONY Records.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Once more, I cannot stress these three words enough, Patience, Consistency and Confidence. Without patience, you will never get the job done because being a musician takes forever! As seen in my Facebook, I’ve been performing more than just this past year. Not mentioned/seen on Facebook are the countless times I played my guitar to survive by playing on the sidewalk or in front of a gas station. I’m just now getting some recognition for all the hard work of the previous years. Patience and confidence is what kept me going when others told me to quit. There are videos of me on youtube playing my guitar for a duck at a lake because I had no one to share my music with, so I played my guitar for a duck. That duck even followed me across the lake when I played for more video footage. This is patience and consistency earning a “new” feathered fan. That weekend, I was able to play a show with confidence because I had been consistent by practicing all week, even if my audience was a duck. As a musician, there is always work to do and always areas to improve upon. My advice to those early in their journey is Pateince, Consistency, and Confidence that you are doing what you were meant to do. Those three things play a huge role in the beginning stages of anything, in my opinion.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am always looking for a person or people to collaborate or work with me. My goal is to take this adventure to the moon and beyond. The only problem is, finding the right people can be challenging. I need people on my team who make music a priority, have a passion for Americana, Country and some Rock n Roll music, and are ready to put in the work needed to continue this journey.
