We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Garrett Mader. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Garrett below.
Hi Garrett, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
There’s a lot of things I do that I would consider self care. Keeping up with my laundry cycle so I can feel good in my clothes, Eating something healthy and filling in the morning, usually eggs on toast with some fruit. One big thing I’ve focused on recently is getting out of bed within ten minutes of my morning alarm. Nothing ruins a day quicker than scrolling instagram in bed before doing anything else.
Keeping up with self care makes me much more effective as a professional and just as a person because it makes me feel much more confident, which just makes it easier to go about anything whether it’s writing a song or making content or just being a good friend to someone.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m gonna answer this prompt backwards by putting my promotion up front. Hooray for good marketing. You can check out my new single Clearer Skies on any streaming platform you prefer.
My overarching professional focus is to be as intuitive and effortless of a musician as I can be. Viewing musicianship in this way makes more certian that I am always providing the music what it needs, and not just playing stuff because it’s what I know. This is true whether I am stacking parts in a recording sessions or locking in with a band on stage, or even just playing a song for a friend or myself.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first quality that comes to mind is my ability to choose friends well and maintain good friendships. It really is about who you know and the impression you leave on people. My second quality is being thorough. I hate to feel underprepared for something. Thirdly is that I have never lost touch with the things that originally made me want to be a musician.
My advice is don’t get distracted. Don’t think content creation is everything because it is a fad. Work on your skill like it’s all there is, and put yourself in real spaces where you can show what you’ve got.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I really want to co-write songs with people. I feel like I am a strong collaborator because I am super quick and adept in some areas, like creating unique chord progressions, but some areas, like lyrics, are a lot less intuitive to me. It’s nice to find a songwriting partner where you can fill in each others’ gaps.
