Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gary A Wales. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Gary A, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
As a film producer and actor, creativity is the lifeblood of my work. I keep my creativity alive by staying open to inspiration in all its forms. Whether it’s a conversation, a scene on the street, or even a fleeting thought, I see potential movie ideas everywhere. When something catches my attention, I don’t just let it pass by—I think on it, let it simmer, and explore its possibilities. If it feels right, I dive in and make it happen. It’s about trusting that initial spark of curiosity and turning it into something tangible. Creativity, for me, is an active process of recognizing opportunities and having the courage to bring them to life.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a film producer and actor, my work revolves around storytelling—bringing narratives to life on screen and creating experiences that resonate with audiences. What excites me most about this process is the magic of collaboration. Whether I’m on set acting or behind the scenes producing, I’m constantly working with talented individuals who bring their own unique perspectives and skills to the table. It’s this collective creativity that turns a simple idea into something extraordinary.
One of the most special aspects of what I do is the ability to touch people’s lives through film. Movies have a unique power to evoke emotions, spark conversations, and even inspire change. Knowing that a project I’m involved with could make someone feel seen or understood is incredibly rewarding.
As for what’s new, I’m thrilled to share that we’re currently in the early stages of developing a project that I’m particularly passionate about. While I can’t reveal too much just yet, I can say it’s a story that I believe will resonate with a lot of people—it’s both timely and timeless, touching on themes that are universally relatable.
For me, it’s not just about creating content; it’s about crafting stories that leave a lasting impact. I want my work to reflect authenticity and to connect with audiences on a deeper level. Whether it’s through a new film or another creative venture, my goal is always to push boundaries and bring something fresh and meaningful to the world.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey, three key qualities have been particularly impactful: perseverance, adaptability, and the ability to collaborate.
Perseverance: The film industry is full of challenges and setbacks, from funding issues to creative differences. Perseverance has been crucial in pushing through these obstacles. It’s about maintaining focus and determination, even when things don’t go as planned. For those early in their journey, I’d say don’t be discouraged by rejection or failure—they are often part of the process. Keep refining your craft, stay committed to your vision, and trust that persistence will pay off.
Adaptability: The landscape of film and entertainment is constantly changing. Whether it’s new technology, shifting audience preferences, or unforeseen challenges on a project, being adaptable has been essential. Embrace change and be willing to pivot when necessary. For beginners, I recommend staying informed about industry trends and being open to learning new skills. The more flexible you are, the better you’ll be able to navigate the ups and downs of the journey.
Collaboration: Film is a highly collaborative art form, and the ability to work well with others is invaluable. Successful projects are the result of strong teamwork, where everyone’s talents and ideas contribute to the final product. Early on, focus on building strong relationships and learning how to communicate effectively with others. Listen, be open to feedback, and recognize the value of diverse perspectives. Great things happen when creative minds come together.
My advice for those starting out is to embrace these qualities early on. Cultivate perseverance by setting clear goals and staying committed to them. Develop adaptability by staying curious and continuously learning. And, perhaps most importantly, practice collaboration by seeking out opportunities to work with others, valuing their input, and building a network of like-minded individuals. These qualities will not only help you navigate the challenges of your journey but will also enrich your creative process and lead to more meaningful work.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
One of the biggest challenges I’m currently facing is the process of relocating to the USA from Scotland. Moving countries is always a complex and emotional journey, but when you add the layers of navigating the visa process, dealing with legal requirements, and coordinating logistics, it becomes even more daunting.
The visa process itself is a major hurdle. It involves a lot of paperwork, meetings with lawyers, and waiting—sometimes for extended periods—before getting the necessary approvals. Each step has to be carefully managed to ensure that everything is in order, which can be stressful and time-consuming. There’s also the challenge of adapting to a new environment, both personally and professionally, and finding a way to maintain the momentum of my work during this transition.
However, despite the challenges, I’m excited about the opportunities that come with this move. The USA offers a vibrant and diverse landscape for the film industry, and I’m looking forward to the new collaborations and creative possibilities that lie ahead. I believe that facing this challenge head-on will ultimately lead to growth, both in my career and personally.
For anyone else going through a similar experience, my advice is to stay patient, keep organized, and seek out support where you can. It’s a tough process, but having a clear vision of what you’re working towards can make it all worthwhile in the end.
