Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gary Thomas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Gary, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I got my work ethic learning from my parents, who worked diligently every day to ensure my brother and I had everything we needed growing up. When we were younger we had chores and helped out around the house. We learned that things cost money and that if we wanted something, we had to earn it. We also learned the importance of doing something that we enjoy and being disciplined. We had been blessed with the luxury of participating in several extracurricular activities, sports, musical arts, etc., giving us the chance to explore and experience many things that could appeal to us building a future with.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ am blessed to be a father and continue my journey as a creative artist. My passions are for music, food, writing, illustration, and creating art of all kinds. I have spent several years working in the food and beverage industry as a private chef and mixologist. As a food and beverage entrepreneur, I am currently focusing on a marketing a couple of projects: Wangs N Thangs and Shot & Sweet. The Wangs N Thangs concept comes from my love for chicken wings, southern comfort foods, and making sauces from scratch! The Shot & Sweet concept comes from honoring my partner’s love for coffee and also my passion to make craft beverages.
Musically, I have been leaning into this A.I. technology. With a combination of my writing ability and the power of the A.I. technology, I have both reimagined some of my older songs and created new musical pieces. Be on the look out for my seven song album for “Kick It With You” (A.I. Variantz) released D.C.R UNIVERSAL A.i./D.C.R ETERNAL MEDIA GROUP in partnership with Urban Unity Productions, LLC.
Our company Urban Unity Productions, LLC continues to produce and distribute music with independent artists who partner with us. We have recently written and released a country song titled “My Magnolia” performed by the band M.A.L.S. (Make American Love Songs). Also, THISISENSAINE (formerly known as ENZO) dropped his new single titled “SuperHuman,” now on all platforms. Certainly more to come!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Important qualities to have: resilience, self awareness, and hustle. A lot of people told me when I was younger that you have to “have thick skin to play this game.” Being resilient has helped me a lot through people doubting me, being pushed aside, not getting the job or roles that I thought I deserved, etc. Pushing forward, seeing the positive side in the darkness, and carving my own path despite setbacks, negativity from others, etc., is a quality that I find very impactful.
Learning to be self aware is immensely rewarding. No one is born perfect, and throughout life we encounter a lot of things that affect us positively and negatively. Things that help us grow and make constant improvements. Learning to do the inner work and go within to find your authenticity. Challenging yourself to do better than the day before, balancing the light and dark within, choosing compassion, helping others when you can. There was a time when my emotions could be explosive, but upon learning to control and alchemize those feelings into productive action is an amazing gift that comes from being self aware.
Hustle is what it is. It’s your drive; it’s what wakes you up and gets you through the day. Motivation!
My advice for people on their journey is to keep learning and never stop searching for new information and opportunities. Read books on things that will help you elevate yourself and your family. Find mentors and people who will challenge you to become better. Preserve and protect your energy. Take breaks when you need them and distance yourself from others when you have to. Give to others in need when you can, save funds when you can, but don’t be afraid to splurge on yourself from time to time. Enjoy your life as much as possible and don’t let anyone make you feel bad for doing what you love!

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Granting me autonomy, with structure, love, and reasonable punishments was very impactful. Teaching us self-respect and self-reliance was also very important.
As I stated earlier, we were blessed with the luxury to be involved with a number of things. My parents encouraged and allowed us to try different things to find what we liked, and it was never forced. However, when we got out of line or did something “bad” we received a punishment to teach us that there are consequences for our behavior and actions.
My parents are always there for me. Always supporting us with love and taking the time to help in any situation. I don’t feel like I talk to them enough, but I always try and stay in touch with them to let them know that I love them. Without their guidance and understanding, I don’t know how I would have been able to handle anything on this journey.
