We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gary Wolfson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gary below.
Gary, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
From past failures. Everytime you get up from a past failure and keep going the stronger you get. So the more failures you recover from the more resilient you get. As long as you keep going…
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have two restaurants called Bunny Chow – South African Grill. The purpose of the business is to bring awareness of South Africa and Africa to the US through food. South Africa is extremely culturaly diverse. From the Xhosa, Zulu and Sotho groups to The Afrikaaners, the Portuguese explorers, The Dutch and English Colonizers…. to the Indian and Malyasian laborers. All our dishes come from these different cultural groups.
Our Bunny Chow (Mild Lamb Curry served in a half loaf of hollowed out bread) bread is from South African Indians. Bobotie is a Cape Malaysian dish. Peri-Peri is a ‘collaborative’ sauce from Portugal and Mozambique. Boerewors is a tradional ‘Farmers sausage’ from the Afrikaaners (Dutch descent) and Mielie pap is a Corn Maize from Black South Africans originally living in rural areas and Chakala is a vegetable dish originally from miners who would share food.
Presently we have two branches, one in Northpark and one in Miramar, are our goal is to open a new one in Encinitas.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
- Know your ‘Why’:
I believe it’s fundamental if you have started a purpose-driven business to know your reasons for starting and continuing the business. If you are just doing it for the money then I cannot really advise on that is that is not my motivation.
- Bookkeeping/Finance:
You must be familiar with a bookkeeping system to keep up-to-date financial records. It is fundamaental to a businesses’ success and growth to have a reliable and accurate bookkeeeping sytem.
- Know thyself:
Know yourself in terms of being a secure person. Insecure people lose their temper in high pressure situations or when there identities are challenged. A person who is comfortable in their own skin and know’s who they are and what they are in it for while have a greater chance of success and endurance and will not get flusterred by neigh sayers.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m looking for investors who want to be part of a new winning food concept that is poised to go International. The investor should also be a purpose driven individual.
