Meet Gaylene Knoke

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gaylene Knoke. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Gaylene, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

When I think of resilience, I think of times in my life when a life situation hit me really hard. I have always been a person who has explored the opportunity to become more spiritually grounded. I believe that it has been helpful to stay connected to my core values. During the most difficult situations in my life, I have always made my best attempt to evaluate myself, gather strength and pass it onto others. Music and dance have played a starring role… When I am singing and expressing myself through dance, I gain confidence. I am challenged to move beyond the limitations that I place on myself. I get the feeling that others are really counting on me to inspire them somehow. I think of music as an artistic expression that takes me beyond what my thoughts say about me. I consider myself very fortunate to be making progress to becoming the person that I want to be.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I have been involved in performing groups since I was six years old. I took theater in High School and College. I performed with the St George Musical Theater. I took dance classes and taught music and dance classes after graduating college. I am currently taking dance classes and singing with the St George Interfaith Choir and the barbershop group Makin’ Harmony. I enjoy the opportunity to provide a service to the community by meeting people and allowing them to see a high quality performance. I am currently offering classes in music, dance, and tutoring. I look forward to new experiences with Shooting Star.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Perseverance, Knowledge and Innovation are the three qualities that have had the most impact on my path of life. I have wanted to give up and I thought of why that was not a good idea. I tried again in a different way. I am always looking for new ways to apply the knowledge that I have. There are many tools that are available to learn. I have been inspired by others who have come before me to show me how to do hard things until they are not so hard.
I would advise others who are interested in artistic endeavors to learn about yourself through writing and a conscious attention to the present activity. Self Care is extremely important. Spend time on learning from others who have experience and enjoy the diversity in the boundless opportunities that are out there to enjoy.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am looking for people to collaborate with. I would like the opportunity to work with other musicians so I can increase my skills. I especially would like to teach dance and beginning music skills. I am also looking for an opportunity to teach music and dance appreciation.
